So according to UVA standards am I challenging myself???

You’re absolutely doing well in terms of course rigor. However, I’m concerned that you dropped French for the coming year. I can’t remember the requirements exactly but I do remember from my college search that UVA recommended more years of a foreign language than any of the others I looked at. I personally dropped Spanish after my junior year in favor of a science class, I suggest you at least think about one more year. Also, even though you started at French 2, as far as I know they just look at the number of years in high school you take it, not so much the level.

what class do u recommend dropping during 11th grade to make room for French 4???

Well that depends on what you chose as electives this year. What can you not change? Also, time/period conflicts can also come into play; at my school some classes were only offered one or two periods out of the day. Thinking about that sort of stuff, I’m assuming the Chem or Stats can be dropped for this year, yes? And if so, either of those (or another class that you choose to drop this year) can still be taken as a senior, so they’ll still get to see that you’re taking that course at some point.

I should point out that what I say is only my opinion. I just checked and UVA requires two years and recommends 5, so I assume they do count if you took French 1 in middle school or got to exempt it or what have you. But a recommendation from the admissions department is just that, not something you have to by any means. If you’re truly excited about the math and science classes, then stay with it. Colleges love to see that you have a passion and have acted on that in your studies, ECs, etc. Go with your gut, is the best thing I can tell you.

You need to take french 4 then maybe drop it. They look for foreign languages.

well jcsmooth i am pretty sure that scheduling is not an issue because our school’s teacher base their periods off from the number of students taking each class

i actually have no interest in the computer field and only took Computer Science for a easy A…i am actually really interested in the “pre-med” track

and i have heard it is imperative to have a foreign language to get into medical school

so i might drop Computer Science AB for french 4…do u feel this valid?

and basketball33-----what excatly do you mean to take it and then “drop it”…???

oh and do you guys think an upward trend would be handy?

i had a 3.33 UW freshman year and raised it to a 3.71 UW/4.22W…so if i continue with this trend next year (with 4 AP’s!!!)…do you feel it will helpful for admission chances?

Switching CS for French sounds fine to me Eagles, and what basketball33 means is not taking French after this year. If you do end up at UVA, expect to be able to test out of the first year of two years of foreign language that’s required for graduation. That should take care of what med schools look for as far as a language goes.

An upward trend starting from 3.3 will most definitely be helpful. To me that’s funny question people ask, because how can improving your grades not be a good thing?

i dropped french my fourth year, but then again i kind of had mandarin under my belt so that was probably why.

if you actually had liked all your classes and not french then i wouldnt say much but if you dont like cs anyways, a foreign langauge is always better

and what jcs said too,
uva has a language req for college of arts and sciences
so you might as well

if i were you i’d keep the sched. because french 4 was a gpa killer for me and my friends.

Colleges (not just UVA) like commitment in general so sticking with French longer shows this quality more.

I think you should drop CS for French 4 also.

yeah so i talked to my counselor and he too advices taking French 4 rather than Comp Sci because i have no interest in that area of study

i forgot to ask him, but, do u guys think because i take French 4, i will have to take french AP because it shows more commitment??

Eagles, my d just completed AP French. She got a 4 on the AP exam which placed her into 300 level French; on the UVA placement test she only scored well enough for 200 level (lots of new to her vocabulary). If you decide after French 4 that you want to continue with French, then do so. I wouldn’t recommend taking AP French just to demonstrate commitment.

oh thanks sabaray
i really appreciate the advise everyone has given so far
so i mostly will take French 4, and see how that goes and if i dont like it end French next year and resume it again in college

I’d say drop Computer Science - especially when you consider that they won’t be offering the AB examination anymore (this year, 2009, was the last year due to a lack of interest).

I took five years of French through middle and high school, and I have to say that showing a level of commitment to language beyond what your school requires (my school requires only three years for an advanced diploma) will show you as a “serious” candidate. Of course, if you really loathe French or it’s killing your GPA, don’t take AP. I did, got a 4, and as a result, get to take lots of fun French classes (i.e., reading books and studying culture and history instead of just rehashing subjonctif, pluparfait, et caetera…) at UVa.

Bonne chance!
