Please test the Forum Index page

It’s fine.

No, you do not need the number of threads or number of replies, imo.

My tennis forum has them but they use symbols so not as obtrusive - instead of replies they use an ?, which I assume means views and a folder ? for # of threads.

I had to go look if they do it and how they do it, as I have never paid any attention to that at all.

They also have time of latest post so one knows if there if there are new posts, thus how active it is.

On their Home page they list the 5 Top Forums (which likely never changes) and right below those ‘Full Forum List’ with an arrow symbol.

TBS, this was a design change done about 6 months ago from VBulletin. It’s now XenForo. Endless complaints from posters ensued. I didn’t complain because compared to the design change mess here - it was infinitely better plus, the site is also available through Tapatalk - which is how I access it often because it’s easier to post pictures, tweets, video using that.

I like the index idea…but still see myself using latest posts, unless I am looking for something specific.

  1. Definitely a step in the right direction!
forum index = the “essential worker” of an online forum

  2. I never used “Jump to Discussion Area” buttons.

  3. I don’t think you need # of threads/replies on the index page.

  4. I agree with this:

THANK YOU!

Thank you!

Yes, definitely a step in the right direction!

I would use that as my starting point and it helps with quickly checking in on other threads in other forums.

I didn’t realize how long it had been until I’d checked the engineering forum. Out of sight, out of mind.

Yes, the forum index would help - I only use the “latest posts” and “bookmarked posts” features so I’m sure I’m missing posts because it’s become hard finding discussions otherwise, this would help.

Yes, this is the missing landing page that we used to use. In a way, it’s more DOS based style info instead of pretty pretty Apple style.

I like having the info all in one place like that and would be more likely to see/participate in other pages than my regulars if I had that index page.

I also wish we could get back the setting that allowed a person to display way more posts per page (or not) and there are threads that display with all the posts, and then a bunch of threads down at the bottom, those links to other threads at the bottom, I find those annoying to my usual method of reading posts. Who knew, but apparently I quite often go to the bottom of the page and scan up the list to find the spot where I had previously stopped

^Agree 100% with the last paragraph! So much unnecessary crap on every page. I find myself HUNTING a lot for what I need.

Yes, it’s a step in the right direction. I find that I don’t use the site as much because it’s too much hunting and pecking.

I don’t know if I’m doing it wrong, but in order to check on my previous responses I have to shrink the page on my mac to find my avatar and then to check my “responses”. I’m probably doing it wrong.

I don’t use the tags because it’s one more thing to hunt.

@“aunt bea”

Do you have 3 bars on the top left of your page?

If you do, click on it and your avi and username will come up. Then click on that and replies come up. Then click on that to see your responses.

@ Emilybee, No, I don’t have that; that’s why I mentioned that I have to shrink my Mac page to find it.

Then the top menu/header disappears when I do that.

I’ve been around the block here so I’m less concerned about my navigating. I have work arounds.

However, for any potential new user who comes to the website, it is not intuitive and it is excessively hard to impossible to find stuff. Putting the index front and center will greatly increase usability. IMO, that is more important than looks. Reddit, for example, gets plenty of traffic and it is super ugly (plus the less moderation thing although I wouldn’t want CC to go quite that free wheeling).

@“aunt bea”

Hopefully someone will tell you how it’s done who has a Mac.

@“aunt bea” Is your avatar not on the top right of your page? On my Mac the top right third of my page has, from left to right- avatar, my screen name, a bell icon for notifications, envelope for inbox for PM, bookmark icon, and setting icon.

You would click on your user name to get all your info.

Hey, I like that! (index page). It looks very much like the “old” CC that I used to be on years ago. Much easier to get an overview and find the general categories you’d like. Super helpful for all, I’d think!

Right now I’m going to ‘latest posts’ and hoping people are talking about what I’m interested in! LOL.

Thanks!!

@snowball, Thank you! I finally ended up having to drag the pointer far right to finally see my avatar. It’s awkward to the far right on screen. When I returned to this page everything reset back to the bars on the left. Maybe it’s the setup on my Mac.
I didn’t have this issue on the original CC, before the change. Guess it’s all DOS based.

As I said previously, anyone who would like to take a stab at modifying the Terms of Service and sending them to Jon is welcome to. Moderators will be happy to enforce whatever rules the site lands on.

This index seems very servicable.

I would suggest you get rid of the distinction of “Top Universities” and just do an alphabetical list. I’d get rid of the Ivy League too. (Regularly bugged because universities ranked lower than the one my kid attended is not on the list!)

@MaineLonghorn I never remember to check out the architecture forum - partly because I did an M. Arch long ago and I don’t think my experience is that relevant.

FWIW, I just bookmarked the Cafe to my toolbar and backtrack to Parents when I want to and got out of the habit of going to places I used to go like Essay advice. So this might make me a more useful participant.
