I see that officers are not required to fill out a report for a day, since it is a traumatic event.
But in this case, I didnt see any indication that assistance was given or that investigators were called immediately after, as is required in Greenville, NC for instance.
The aftermath of lethal force
Departments in St. Clair County largely follow the same procedures following an officer-involved shooting.
Before the investigations start and before medical help arrives, an officer involved in a shooting would render first aid to the person injured.
The officer or deputy then would notify dispatch and his or her duty command officer, St. Clair County Undersheriff Tom Buckley said.
The ranking command officer would respond to the scene and secure it. The officer involved would be placed on paid administrative leave.
An independent agency would be called in to do a criminal investigation, Buckley said. That outside agency could be the Michigan State Police or a special investigative team made up of sheriff detectives from other counties.
Port Huron Public Safety Director Michael Reaves said the independent investigation ensures the process remains transparent.
