Police officers and the good things they do

Amazing story of courage.
“Kepp, whose legs were amputated as a result, has returned partly to work and is helping train his fellow officers in the work he was doing Oct. 18. He also is working with county officials to convince members of the Maryland Assembly to rework laws to ensure that incidents like his are less likely to happen.”

Many times, when someone dials 911, police officers are the first to the scene. Sometimes the responsibility to save a life falls directly on them.

I’m pretty impressed with the moose, too. I have no illusions that I would have made it if I had been in that situation.

The giant moose quickly crawled onto the ice, but the cold and constant treading water — the ordeal lasted around 2 hours

This is more about what the rescue squads do but police officers are exposed to this kind of thing more than they would like to be.

“The gunman had arrived at the hospital carrying a bag with a handgun and zip ties and went straight to the ICU, where he held staff members hostage, Barker said.

When Ortiz came out into the hallway still holding the ICU employee at gunpoint, the officers opened fire and fatally shot Ortiz, Barker confirmed.

While investigators have not yet given a motive for the attack, the incident appears to have been specifically targeted at the ICU, Barker said. In the previous week, the gunman was in contact with the ICU for a medical purpose involving another individual, according to Barker.

“No patients have been injured. The hospital is now secure,” Susan Manko, spokesperson for UPMC Memorial in York, told CNN.

The officer who died was Andrew Duarte, his department confirmed on Facebook. Duarte had joined the department in 2022 after five years at the Denver Police Department, according to his LinkedIn profile. In 2021, Duarte had received the Mothers Against Drunk Driving hero award for his work in impaired driving enforcement.

“He was someone who put on the uniform of service and went out to try and keep his neighbors safe,” Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who met with Duarte’s parents Saturday evening, said at the news conference. “He is to be commended for a life of service, albeit cut way too short from a life of service to others. We’re deeply grateful to him.”

May he rest in peace.

Not sure being murdered falls under “good things they do.” This post was moved here.

This dominated the news here last night. They haven’t released many details yet.

I think there might be juveniles involved (either the knife wielder or the potential victims) so it will take longer for the information to come out.

A Facebook friend shared this post:

So this happened in Montana. I’m on my way to go to my interview this morning when I get pulled over. By a Montana officer. I am native American and my friend that was with me is black. Just saying. Both brake lights decided to go out this time. As he walked to the car and I was pulling out my stuff, he quickly said, “Don’t worry about pulling anything out. I just want you to know that your brake lights are out.” So I’m immediately upset, because I just got them replaced like last month. So I explained to him how Firestone wants to charge me $600 just to run a test on the wiring of the car. He looked at me like 😨 and told me to pop the trunk. He checked the lights in the trunk and tapped them, but they didn’t come on. So he told me to pop the hood to check the relay box then asked me to get out to check the other one. Then worked on the wiring under the dash. He could’ve easily given me a ticket, but Officer Jenkins stepped out of officer role, and into mechanic role, and human role. to make sure I was straight. By the way HE FIXED THEM. Not everyone is racist, or a bad cop

It’s always nice to see a story that humanizes police officers. I’m flying out in the coming weeks to attend an awards ceremony for law enforcement, fire/rescue and civilians that put themselves in harms way to help people last year. It’s heartwarming to hear all of the stories in detail. It makes for a very positive afternoon.

Yesterday a defendant entered the courthouse in Woburn, MA wearing a helmet and a gas mask while carrying 8 cannisters of pepper spray. The female court officer tried to hold the door closed, but couldn’t. She was immediately sprayed with pepper spray, but still chased down and tackled the suspect to protect others.
