Politics in supplemental essay?

I am extremely interested in studying International Relations in college. Anyways, I wanted to write a supplemental essay on the time I had a Jewish roommate on one of the conferences I attended and how my conversations with her have influenced my opinion on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

The point is not to preach, or explain my opinion on any side and who I think is right. The main topic is about how gathering around a good meal fosters a strong connection between different people, in that case between a Muslim and a Jew and how that made me understand the other point of view. But I am worried about writing this topic because so many people have emphasized not to talk about politics because the person reading my essay may disagree or not like it etc…

Do I write or cancel it and think of something else?

People will tell you not to write about politics for two reasons. First, you should be writing about YOU. Secondly, “politics” is one of those bad manners at dinner parties topics because people have deeply held and unpredictable beliefs so you want to avoid controversy or offense. Your topic sounds both very personal to your experience, and to be open to differing opinios, therefore inoffensive. It sounds like a good choice to me.
