I’ll start as a Junior in High School in August. That’s 5 months away! I have literally never done any sport in my life competitively. But I have 5 months before school starts and 5 months to make up for the two years of High School I didn’t play. I’m not tall and really not physically strong at all and I suck at catching things, throwing things, kicking things and have low stamina. And I don’t have the luxury of being able to do women’s sports…
So which one do you think one has the best chance at moving from 0 to decent in 5 months?
Baseball
Basketball
Football
Soccer
Softball
Volleyball
The reason I never played is because I always hated sports. Well, I hated loosing, at that was 98% of the time. I do have asma, but I don’t think that’s a good enough excuse.
Why do you want to join a team sport all of a sudden? If your bad at catching, kicking, not tall, and have asma and low stamina then you honestly probably wouldn’t be able to do any of these unless you really put a ton of effort into it. Do you know if any of them are particularly easy to get into at your school?
You don’t have the “luxury of being able to do women’t sports”? What does that even mean? You have softball on your list - in HS that’s a women’s sport. The easiest to “learn” would be track and field or cross country because you can train on your own and if you are in shape, you can compete even without knowing the nuances of racing that the good runners know. Can you run with your asthma?
Don’t do a sport just to do a sport. Unless you truly want to invest time and enjoy a sport, then there is no point. Also, as others have pointed out, if you can’t even throw/kick/have low stamina, then even “women’s sports” (whatever that mean) might be out of your reach. You will have to train very hard if you want to do any sport.
Honestly, if sports is not your thing, there are many other things that you can focus and excel on that don’t make the use of athletic capabilities. From the abundance of school clubs and volunteering opportunities, I’m sure you can find something that you will enjoy.
That line about women’s sports is incredibly insulting.
And this from someone who admits he:
is not tall
and really not physically strong at all
and who sucks at catching things,
throwing things,
kicking things
and has low stamina.
It sounds to me as though a lot of our freshman or JV female athletes (forget those with the “luxury” of being on the female varsity teams) could make mincemeat out of you. The girls in my school work every bit as hard as the guys to be good at what they do.
(And, by the way: if you suffer from asthma, you’re going to want to learn to spell it.)
OK, now that that’s out of the way: the quick answer is what you should have expected. There is no sport that someone who isn’t already an athlete is going to pick up quickly.
Ya’ll are getting unnecessarily butt-hurt. Yes, OP could have worded it better, but he didn’t, let’s move on over the women’s sport thing.
I say volleyball.
You said that you’re bad at kicking things, catching things, throwing things… that eliminates every sport on that list.
What? This makes zero sense. Then why are you even thinking about trying a sport now if you “always hated sports”? By any chance, is this a desperate attempt to pad your ECs?
All- Here in America things are very different. All of a sudden Chess isn't good enough. And what's worse is everyone here starts school one year later... -_- So I'm all of a sudden one year younger and I really don't want to redo the grade Thanks for your advice everyone
5- Yeah they do make me mincemeat, but the men's teams consistently make me a paste But I maintain that it would be a luxury for ME Perhaps you should improve your reading comprehension before you paint abstract implications but I hope you understand my meaning now: that for me, specifically it is easier. And what do you mean "JV" (not Joint Venture, right?
7- Nah, I have great ECs, but they could always get better. I want more social connections and better health; also, my favorite billionaires all took sports. I also dislike chemistry, but I take it nonetheless because it's useful
Having zero coordination at all, I’ve always found volleyball to be pretty decent for me, even though I’m skinny - though I am pretty tall. If you’re going to cower away from the ball, then never mind.
I’d say that cross-country would be the least competitive, or maybe you could do golf? Cross-country doesn’t require much coordination, as long as you don’t trip over your own feet; but track is much faster, and less paced out that cross country is. Golf is also pretty non-competitive over here, so if you’re trying to pad up your EC’s (and it really seems like it - no one who hates sports says "K, I’m going to learn a totally new sport in 5 months and make the team), golf would work. Football, baseball, basketball, are all really competitive no matter where you’d go, so I’d say that that’s nearly impossible. You can’t exactly be weak and short and play any of them. Tennis would work, perhaps, if your school offers it? Tennis always seems to be the typical “Asian” sport (no racism, I myself am an Asian girl, and the Asians who play at my school are on the thinner, shorter side. And by the way, softball is only for girls.
If you lose 98% of the time, you’re really going to have to lower that number to make a school team.
But seriously, try cross country. You can improve significantly over the course of five months. It also tends to attract more cerebral types. Go out today and run/walk a mile. You can run with asthma, too, just stay on top of it.
