I’ve been anxiously lurking on this thread all day. I’d like to share something my Harvard interviewer told me thirty years ago, “hey, I don’t know if you’ll get in. You probably won’t. You’re qualified though. You earned it. But for every Harvard spot, there are ten qualified applicants. Being rejected might hurt but remember that it’s meaningless”
Four years later, four of the best years of my life, I graduated from another excellent school and today I continue to have a wonderful life. Full of ups and downs just like I expected. You will too. No doubt.
I never got an email notifying me that there was an update and I only knew because I checked the portal at like 7:05… was this the case for anyone else? And I’ve spent the morning combing through my email (including spam) to see if I missed it.
I’ve never seen ED deferral numbers broken out, but besides what the website says about them, last year a Pomona AO said that they will often defer because they would like to “see more information” from the applicant, particularly to see if an applicant recovers from a low mid-semester grade or is still invested in a recently joined EC. So, like the website says, send your AO updates about your grades, activities, and test scores. You’ve got their attention… hang in there!!!
@bex3109 , I ended up at Amherst. It and all the other NESCAC schools are excellent. Also, if, like my kid, you want West Coast: the other 5C’s (Claremont, Mudd, Pitzer, Scripps), Reed, Willamette, Redlands, Oxy. If PA is ok, I absolutely love Haverford.
So many awesome schools out there. Good luck (even though you don’t need it)!
I applied ED2! (deferred ED1 to a different school so to all of you who got deferred or rejected, I feel for you) Also, I agree with @anxiousdadd that everything will turn out fine, I mean you are essentially done with highschool! I hope this works out, if not, oh well.
Is the admitted students event in the spring worthwhile? In the past it’s only a one day event (no evening activities or overnight stay with current students). We would be flying from the east coast and it seems a long way to go for a one day event.
@Quyen@theoyassa, I was deferred last year, accepted RD. There’s a very very old thread on this website that talks about deferrals at Pomona I think, helped me a lot, and has some really valuable suggestions. Overall, like someone else on this thread has said, Pomona has very low deferral rates, my AO told me later that they try not to defer a lot of people for a lot of reasons that I don’t remember (this was early fall semester), unlike a lot of other really selective schools (that defer a lot of people, keep their hopes up, etc.) If you still really want to get in and would like some other advice feel free to message me as well, I may not be able to share much, but I can share what I did when I got deferred.
@bobozeak I’m not sure ASW is necessary for someone who ED’d - unless you want to get a head start on planning for move-in day. We attended even though our kid was also admitted ED, but we also live local. It was a few years ago, but our impression was that the weekend was geared to students (and parents) who were still trying to decide. For those of you who will fall into that category in mid-March, what impressed us about Pomona’s vs those we attended for other kids was the amount of time over the 2 days that was set aside to just hang out with current and prospective students and even profs to see if Pomona had the right vibe for them. We felt that Pomona really wanted students to be sure they wanted to be there as opposed to it just being a sales job.
Thanks that’s very helpful. When I went to college there was a weekend visit where you spent time with current and incoming students and got to party with them. This sounds different.
Does anyone know when RD results are supposed to be released? I know that last year they came out March 15th, this year that same Friday would be the 13th. Everything has been coming out a week early this year, but March 6th seems way too soon.
@wtchfthwst I agree that it seems too soon, but when they sent that email out last night about making sure you can log on to your account, makes me think they are getting ready to release early. What do you think?
@wtchfthwst I believe Pomona decisions usually come out on the third Friday in March (based on past years). This would mean they would normally come out March 20th, but if they’re coming a week earlier this year, then they’ll be out March 13th. The email they sent out makes me think it’s not coming this week, since they said it’s “released in the next few weeks” but I’m just speculating. Hope it’s out soon!
I haven’t been getting the auto emails from them since my portal opened up (first applied ED1, deferred). I didn’t even get an email notifying me that there was an update to my portal the night they sent ED1 decisions. Should I ask my admissions officer about this or just let it be?
