Maybe he met with her about his plan to fast track annulments. She has a few marriages that need to annulled to put her on the right side of the ledger RE living in sin and all that.
It is fast track annulment, not bulk annulment, that is proposed.
What does this mean? That ex-Catholics will say things they are not allowed to say as practicing Catholics?
I don’t know about that, but I think that they would be offended by her. A lapsed Catholic gives an opportunity to bring someone back into the fold, but someone who has left the church and “signed the book” at another one? And then comes around trying to meet his holiness? Most people would find that insulting.
Sorry, but I don’t follow you. Who would find what insulting?
Most people belonging to Church A, would find it insulting if a person is raised in Church A, confirms in Church A, but then leaves Church A for another church, and then comes back, years later, not to rejoin Church A, but to well… ah, I’ll leave it up to you to decide what she was trying to do.
I don’t relate to that type of infighting, as I am not religious. But I would be surprised If Catholics begrudged a non-Catholic for wanting to meet with the Pope. That doesn’t sound right. And I assume it is the Pope who is the gatekeeper in the situation anyway. Its hard to imagine that Davis would have the power to order him to meet with her, against his own desires. He must have wanted to meet with her.
I don’t know, maybe he did want to meet her, maybe it was more like those professional liars who crashed the White House state dinner years ago. Because they got in, people treated them as if they were legitimate.
Kim Davis is petty and mean. The pope hasn’t shown himself to be that way but maybe I’m wrong about him.
The pope gave Kim Davis some rosaries according to the news.
My thinking was Kim Davis’ attorney was trying to somehow ‘use’ the Pope. I really haven’t read much about Kim Davis, her personal history etc. Maybe she is seeking faith, was encouraged, somehow got to meet the Pope.
For those that believe, the Rosary is a powerful prayer ‘weapon’. I know non-Catholics that will pray Divine Mercy Novena or other Novenas.
There are a lot of people with agendas against Catholicism - many preachers are openly anti-Catholic. That is why concern has to be drawn.
Well the story - or at least, A story - is coming out. I heard on the radio that the US bishops were against the meeting which is why none of them attended. The one who set it up was the Papal Nuncio which is an extremely powerful position whose current holder is a Benedict appointee. The story says that Francis agreed to the meeting to placate the hard right in the Vatican. Like so much in the Vatican, we may never know. But interested Catholics should watch to see any news over the next months to see if the Papal Nuncio is still in his job.
I personally don’t have a problem with Francis meeting with people who are anti- LBGT rights. It’s not his job to worry about the US Constitution. However, he does need to worry about the integrity of his message, which may be why the meeting was kept secret.
Nothing is as complicated as Vatican intrigue. It beats even the US Congress.
Catholic church does not endorse gay marriage, does it? Pope meeting with Kim Davis is not inconsistent with their position in this regard. Aren’t we a bit overly sensitive?
This pope is not going to conform to anybody’s expectations, obviously. I like that about him, even though I think he made a mistake in this particular case.
You can oppose gay marriage and still think Kim Davis is wrong to believe God gave her a pass on doing her job. My Catholic family love “Pope Frank” but think he got this one wrong, and I agree.
She should have just quit if she didn’t agree with what she was asked to do.
It this wasn’t a mistake, or at the very least a known hot button of questionable judgement, why did they plan it in advance and keep it so hush hush? That is a great disappointment.
The coverage I read indicated that the Pope agrees with and supports “conscientious objectors,” including if they are government employees. His action and statements indicate a full endorsement of what Davis is doing.
This seems in line with Catholic doctrine as I (a non-Catholic) understand it.
How about if one of his priests decided to be a " conscious objector" because he decided he changed his mind about his vow of celibacy?
That is only moderately tongue-in cheek, as the term “conscious objector” is only considered in the context of military war. Its irrelevant with respect to Davis doing her job. Sorry-- its nonsense.
So a Catholic judge can refuse to grant a divorce, according to this theory? No, no, this is not Catholic doctrine. Render unto Caesar. He should have picked someone who wasn’t lawless.
Well the Pope said it and I don’t think he can be wrong, right?
