Pope's Visiting the USA

@saintfan - yes, that’s what Boeing said on the tour my husband and son took (3 shifts). Still, they had a big emphasis on the backlog (can’t remember the stat that used but it was impressive). I guess we had the impression that the 3 shifts related to the backlog but I guess not!

I’m still bummed I couldn’t go.

I guess the Pope really had an effect on John Boehner. He’s resigning.

Musicprnt - paragraph break? Pretty please?

RE post#96 - hence, when the Chinese President visited Boeing he went to Everett, home of the 777, 777x and 787 NOT Renton where final assembly of the 737 is done. Most of the 737 actually comes from Wichita KA, though.

Pretty tacky IMO - the phones in church. It may be Madison Square Garden but it is “church” now. Why not be in the moment?

What is WRONG with people!!??!!

I’m not Catholic, so I hesitate to comment, but I have to say that I can’t think of two bigger wastes of the Pope’s time and energy than addressing Congress and the UN, two organizations that are 100% resistant to positive change and whose members are completely focused on self-interest. A hundred papal visits wouldn’t move either organization an inch.

On the contrary many people seemed very moved. I was very moved by his words about the difficulty and challenges of such human endeavor and yet the nobility of public service. Even if nobody in the US congress were moved the American public who heard his words might come to expect something more than we’ve recently gotten.

I don’t get it. Isn’t it true that Congressmen are elected by citizens?! If they are so focused on their self-interest, why can’t the voters do anything to prevent them from being so self-interest focused?! Isn’t this what the democracy is about? (unless we admit this system does not work very well.)

Re: Boeing. The production lines at the Boeing plant are so cool! The airplane itself is being moved at the speed of a few inches per hour while the assembly folks are working on it - this is done to create a sense of urgency. I went on an actual production floor tour (not the one offered to tourists). We had to bring our US passports - no foreign passport holders were allowed. Yup, the Dreamliner is backordered.

@mcat2 - Part of working towards the common good is to have a common understanding of what that means. It is one thing to have differing opinions about how to go about accomplishing something but quite another if you can’t agree on a few very basic principles. The Pope was trying to reiterate and clarify some foundational guiding principles of the Catholic Church according to Jesus. That is within his authority. In his talks he also attempted to talk about basic ideals for our shared humanity (like shared humanity) and suggest that as flawed as they may be those representative political bodies DO have an important and noble role to play.

In our pluralistic society our representative bodies as a whole have been getting stuck in the figurative mud a lot, but that doesn’t mean that individual members aren’t representing the wills of those who elected them. That’s the rub. There is also the issue of citizens being distracted by political shiny objects so as to forget where there deeper self interest lies. The Pope seemed to be trying to get us to get back to looking at core values rather than letting ourselves get side tracked.

It does surprise me, though, that we can’t seem to agree on or rally behind some of the more existential causes.

Probably true.

But, he didn’t really just appear to them since the whole thing was televised…so we all got to be “moved” by those events.

That may also generally apply to the Catholic Church, despite slight recent change.

I am glad the Pope went to those in power to speak and pray. I believe people can be awakened by a single event like this although that change may not be readily apparent to anyone.

This Pope can be an inspiration to all to put humanity before profit. I am happy to see so many people involved in helping him spread his message of compassion.

A very powerful crusader with a message to do no harm and to help those in need. There is hope.

The Pope looks absolutely exhausted. So much expected of him. So many stairs.

I hate to be political correct here but which Pope would say to put profit before humanity.

Our trip to NYC on Thursday for my nephew’s wedding went very smoothly. I think we were just lucky to be in the “right” parts of the city, because a friend said her husband had a hard time getting from Point A to Point B.

@DrGoogle - many Catholic politicians have put some parts of the church message above others. This Pope quite specifically said that he is and other Catholics should shift focus to some of the other issues which were central to the message of Jesus including the poor, sick, displaced and children. He is advocating a change in emphasis.

H was running this morning along the East River near Avenue C and saw the motorcade. That’s the closet he got in 4 days.

I actually think people gives a man at such an old age a job that is too demanding. (I heard this Pope had some health problem when he was even not that old.)

One of my relatives decided to take a multiple countries vacation trip around this Pope’s age, and died during his long vacation trip!

Why is it often the case that the Pope is so old?
