Dressing professionally is always good, but business casual should be fine. If wearing a suit will help you feel more professional, you can wear a suit, but if it will make you feel uncomfortable and stiff, then go with business casual. My daughter wore slacks, a blazer, a turtleneck, and oxfords.
My daughter had her 3rd interview 2 nights ago. She was told by the Posse personnel that official results would be communicated next week. But, she also heard from other finalists that they got texts that same night, with Zoom links for a meeting. If she didn’t get a call /text the same night, does it mean that she was not selected for the scholarship?
When researching, I read that finalists heard that night, but there was nothing official on that. My son had his 3rd interview on December 1st. He heard from them on December 5th that he was not selected. We knew it was a long shot but still disappointing.
So sorry about your son, I can understand how you’re feeling. My daughter still hasn’t heard from Posse, so there’s a mix of anxiety, sadness, disappointment, while still trying to hope for the best. Did your son sign up for Posse access, and has he heard from other Posse universities? Have they reached out to ask him to apply?
He did sign up for access, but I don’t believe he’s heard anything. There are two other Posse schools that he was going to apply to anyway. One is a target school, and one is a safety. Maybe Posse will provide a little boost?
Reviving this thread to re-ask the question someone asked already – is one locked into ED if the Posse is not awarded? The only reply I see says that many students are low-income enough that they would get sufficient aid anyway, but I am curious whether anyone specifically knows what happens, or has experience with a situation where someone is admitted ED but doesn’t get the scholarship. Can they then back out of the ED commitment?
No, the ED application is part of the Posse selection process. If a Posse finalist is not selected as a Posse Scholar, it is also considered as not being accepted ED, and the finalists have no further commitment to the college or to Posse.
So no, it is not possible to be accepted ED to the college with which a finalist is matched without being selected as a Posse Scholar.
However, if they opt in to Posse Access, their application is automatically forwarded to all Posse partners for consideration, and these colleges may reach out and ask the finalist to apply RD (it commonly happens). However, these colleges will only offer the financial aid and scholarships that the applicant would qualify for as an RD applicant, though a Posse Finalist will generally be highly competitive for any merit of merit+need based financial aid.
Thank you! That is good to know. Since for college we are aiming for a full tuition coverage option, I was nervous about the idea of being on the hook for ED sans Posse.
I guess that your kid was nominated this summer, so good luck! If you have any questions, feel free to ask (my kid was a Posse scholar, and I volunteer with them).
Thank you! Yes, he was (or will be – not sure what the deadline is for the nominating party). Thank you for offering to answer questions; I definitely will take you up on that offer! It seems like such a great program, and the school options are fantastic (I am a little bummed, though, that my own alma mater isn’t a partner for our city, though it is for some of the other cities).
Another question about Posse logistics. We are currently waiting to hear whether S25 has made the cut for DAP3. I am a little confused by the timeline. I have heard people say that if someone is offered a finalist spot, they have to accept or decline very quickly, something like 24 hours. Is that really the case? If it is, I don’t understand when we would visit the potential “match” college, which, of course, S25 would like to do before committing to going there if he is selected.
None of the schools that S25 ranked are affordable for us without Posse, and thus he simply wouldn’t be applying to them otherwise – so it does not really seem like a great option to spend the next month visiting five colleges that he would not apply to outside of Posse context – a time-consuming and expensive prospect – just in case one of them matches with him as a finalist. How do other people do this? Or is the window between DAP3 offer and acceptance in reality longer than 24 hours / long enough that there is time to go visit the school?
First thing I would say is have your kid ask their Posse mentor or someone else in the Posse office this question.
Just to talk thru it, timing of finding out DAP3 school is late-ish October, correct? Then, the common app to the Posse school will be due sometime within the first two weeks of Nov.
That window seems like when you would ideally visit…Before putting in the common app and going thru DAP3 interviews in Dec?
And just to be clear, you ran NPCs at the Posse schools you referenced and you wouldn’t receive need based aid at least equivalent to full tuition? (Yes, I know not all Posse schools meet need, and not all Posse students qualify for need based aid.)
Thank you! My kid can definitely email the office and ask.
The thing that threw me was hearing from someone whose kid went through the process (and reading about something similar on Reddit in one case) that after being notified that they made the cut to DAP3, they had a very short window of time (like a day) to confirm that they wanted to proceed. Timeline wise, I think you are right, there are at least a couple of weeks between notification and the DAP3 itself, and it’s totally possible to visit the school then, but it sounded like the commitment to move forward with DAP3 (and thus the commitment to the outcome of the process) might need to be made very quickly?
That is correct about the NPC, they project a parental contribution that in reality would not be feasible for us. And even beyond that, the projected aid, while substantial, includes loans, and my goal for my kid is a college education with no loans on the other end.
There is about a week between when your kid gets their answer and when they have to accept or not accept their match. There is also a meeting between all the kids who were matched + their parents and the representatives of the school with which they are matched, and there everything is clarified.
Our kid was notified that she was matched on October 18th, and the meeting was on the 24th. We had to RSVP for the meeting by the 22nd, and I think that there was an additional day after the meeting (so I think the 23rd) to make the decision, so a week total.
So unless you live really close to the college with which your kid is matched, you will be unlikely to be able to visit the college between the time you are matched and the time when you will need to give a response.
Our kid saw her campus for the first time when we dropped her off. It worked out pretty well.
On the other hand, Posse is more than a simple scholarship - it’s a support system, and a network.
Also remember that kids who are Posse Scholars have a different campus experience than other kids. To begin with, they are arriving with their Posse. Part of the Posse process is that the Posse spend a lot of time before the school year bonding - once a week, every week, between January when the Scholars are officially announced, and up to a week before the school year begins. On Campus, they will also have at least another 30 Posse Scholars who are already there who will help, as well as a Posse Faculty mentor.
I would also like to add that I regularly volunteer for the DAP1 large group interviews, and am always impressed by the kids who are nominated. That is before they have selected the top 5% of the nominees. The chance to go through college with a cohort of that caliber of students is not something to turn down lightly either.
Thank you, that’s great to know that there is a week or so to work with.
I personally would definitely want to see a place I was committing to for four years, even in the context of an amazing opportunity, and want S25 to have that ability. So if he makes it to DAP3 and if we have a week, we will make it work with visiting a campus.
Thanks for people’s help on this thread! S25 made it as a Posse finalist, and his “match” school is the school he ranked first. Now fingers crossed for the final round.
