Possibility for a college student

I am a 19 year old college student in Lynchburg Virginia. I attended Virginia Episcopal School and graduated with a 2.9 in 2004. Also, two students from VES, a Third Year and a Plebe, went to the Naval Academy. I however, could not seeing as my grades were horrendous. Now, I have “more or less” grown up, my GPA in college is now a 3.4 and considerably rising. BY the end of this semester I will be in the 3.6 and above range. My athleticism is quite substantial itself. I am a First Degree Black Belt in American Freestyle Karate and a Black Belt in Aikido and I help Teach both styles at the local Dojo. And have been training with the local VES cycling team every year. I also have been running 10 miles 3 days a week. I currently work part time at another job other than the Dojo while I go to school.

I plan on retaking the SAT and since my apathetic mindset from high school has left me, I will be studying very hard for it and plan on making above the minimum requirement for the USNA. I am also currently IN the Navy, because I had orriginally thought that I did not have the capabilities from High School to get into the Academy. But one of my Midshipman friends said the USNA does not look at old grades and with new ones from Central Virginia Community College I should be fine; which I am thankful for because I have most definately “Grown Up” since those days. So, if I get into the Naval Academy I will call off my DEP enlistment and go to school instead. If I do not, I will be heading to boot in April and off to SWCC ‘A’ school after that.

I have two questions:

I am not going to apply for my nomination until April of next year (2006) planning to start my Plebe year of 2007. So, is there anything, ANYTHING that will help my chances of getting in as far as Leadership qualities and Time Management capabilities are considered?

I’ve pretty much got the education side of it taken care of which brings the next question:

Given I do the required tasks, what are the chances that the Naval Academy will overlook my bad past (Lets face it, almost all of us has had some sort of screw up; Mine was just longer) and concentrate on the NEW me and hopefully after the obtained Nomination recieve an Appointment??

Thanks,
Camden

It really all depends. If you strong academically, and you don’t have any physical performance problems, the admissions office looks at what you have to offer. Your past will be known, but a decision won’t be based soley on that, unless it was horrible. I have people in my squad that were in jail for a short period of time, but then again, they joined the Marine Corps before they got here. I’m going to tell you to go and enlist, but that was just the reality of it. The golden rule here is: If you want it enough, they’ll know.

Thank you muchly:

I definately want it enough to show as most of my friends and collegues will tell you. So thank you, I will continue with my plan of applying for a Nomination in April and proceed with the appointment process hoping I get one. Thanks Again.

Another question: Do you know of any “leadership” or volunteer programs the Academy likes to see which help the chances of getting in?

Boggs

Leadership and/or volunteer opportunities when you have a passion for the activity is what’s important.

I understand that, I am looking at starting a Republican Commitee at the community college and have gotten my EMT certification and wouldn’t mind being a Volunteer Firefighter. I wouldn’t be volunteering for anything unless I enjoyed it. I was just asking to see if there were any specific ones that they look highly upon. And if I saw one I enjoyed, then I would see about doing it. If I did not like what I saw, then I wouldn’t worry about it and I would find other means of catching their attention.
Thanks.

Just a side note, plan on volunteering for lots and lots of things you don’t want to do, Welcome to the US Navy! lol.

Haha Very good point, I’ve already been “Volunteered” to go to schools and malls and community events to assist in recruiting people for the U.S. Navy. I’ve gotten 4 so far. But yea I understand that one completely
