Post-grad in the US with a B.Tech in IT?

Hey everyone. My WBJEE rank will be out in a week or so and although I really want to study Computer Science and Engineering I’m worried that I may not get the rank required for it. I’ll most probably get into the IT course. If that is the case I’m torn between what to pursue:

Option a) I pursue a B.Sc in Computer Science Hons followed by an M.Sc in Computer Science from a renowned college.

Option b) I pursue a B.Tech in IT from a decent private institution( not the NIT’s or IIT’s since I won’t get the rank…not even colleges like VIT or SRM since they are too expensive)

After that, I want to do my MS in Computer Science in the US but will they recognise a B.Tech in IT?? Furthermore, IT abroad seems to be completely business oriented whereas I want to go into proper coding and Computer Science. My ultimate dream is to go into videogame designing or work for a tech giant like Google, Microsoft, Facebook etc.

With that in mind, which would be the better route: B.Sc and M.Sc in Computer Science or a B.Tech in Information Technology?? Thanks! :)

So, are you from Kolkata?
I also have the same ambitions as you do, and am trying to do my studies entirely in the US, as the quality of B.Sc. in Computer Science here is really poor. You’d be better off pursuing B.Tech. from Jadavpur/BESU and then going to the US. ← Assuming most people do it this way.

The thing is my WBJEE rank will not be good enough to even get into a college like Jadavpur or Besu. I will only be able to get into a private institution with my rank. They are decent colleges but they are definitely nothing compared to an NIT or Jadavpur in terms of reputation. If my rank is good enough for them I will do my B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering and so I don’t have any issue with that. My problem is if my rank is not good enough and I end up studying IT in one of those colleges. From what I know the IT students don’t even get the same job as CSE grads.

So, that is why I am stuck between choosing B.Sc-M.Sc in Computer Science Hons from St. Xavier’s College or a B.Tech in IT from a private college.

Note: If I take the B.Sc-M.Sc route I will do my M.Sc straight after B.Sc without any gap in between the two.

A St.Xaviers B.Sc will qualify for a “better” US college, however, nothing matters about the type of college you go to. Try to have as many Extra Curriculars and Experiences from different fields(independent research/Google Summer of Code) as you can, as the colleges want well rounded individuals for the M.S. Courses.

St. Xaviers is a good school and I don’t understand your problem with joining the Masters program right after your B.Sc. Why do want to have some gap in between?

I don’t want a gap because a B.Sc is definitely lower than a B.Tech whereas an M.Sc is somewhat at power with a B.Tech. A B.Tech would take 4 years to complete whereas the B.Sc+M.Sc route will take 3+2 years. So I want to complete the M.Sc in minimum possible time. US colleges will not recognise the 3 yr B.Sc degree for their M.S. On the other hand, the B.Tech will take 4 years so it will be recognised but I’m worried about whether the fact that it is a B.Tech in IT and NOT CSE will hamper my chances of doing an M.S in CS in the US.

Okay wait! I’m really sorry. I didn’t knew that you were referring to St. Xavier’s College in Calcutta. I was thinking it to be St. Xavier University in Chicago.

Once again, I apologize for this confusion. I do not have enough knowledge about your concern to comment on this thread. Good luck!

Ahhh alright. No prob :)
