JHS, I heard about that but didn’t see it. I was able to find a youtube video from an earlier game this season. You’re right, pretty amazing. I also enjoyed Jeff Daniels singing God Bless America at the 7th inning stretch in Detroit. He lives in MI and is a big Tigers fan.

It’s a pretty sad commentary on the decline of Detroit, which gave so many amazing popular musicians to the world, if the best they can do for the post-season is Jeff Daniels.

Not that I have anything against Jeff Daniels, who is a fine actor. But he’s no Diana Ross or Smokey Robinson. Or, for that matter, Madonna, Bob Seger, Eminem, or Jack White.

Although it’s true that Jeff is not known as a musician in the way that those you’ve listed are, he actually has been a musician his entire adult life and regularly performs. Admittedly, having seen him live a few times, a 50,000 seat stadium is not his preferred venue. My guess is that he was chosen because he’s a rabid Tigers fan, has been for many years, and he lives in the area. I’m not sure that any of the others are a match with those criteria.

Going for the sweep, take 2.

Dumbest rain delay I’ve ever seen. It didn’t even start raining until almost 11.

The absolute best musical performance in baseball was at a Tigers game. I’m talking Jose Feliciano doing the anthem in 1968. Check it out on youtube. It’s beautiful.

And it was heavily reviled at the time as disrespectful. I think that’s hilarious because the anthem is a stolen German drinking song meant to be sung to the rhythm of steins full of beer swaying back and forth and not in the sometimes stately, sometimes stolid manner we usually hear. If it’s disrespect you’re looking for, I’d nominate any of those now common florid versions with melisma that approaches yodeling. “O-o-o-o-o-o-o” and “yet wa-a-a-a-a-a-a-aved” or la-a-a-a-a-and of the-e-e-e free and ho-o-o-o-ome of the bra-a-a-a-a-a-a-ave". I gather excess is now patriotic. Listen to Jose. (And remember, he’s blind and can’t even see the flag.) He makes it real.

Feliciano’s version might have been amazing in 1968, especially considering the circumstances, but I think that this version eclipses all others.

Love…Jose Feliciano.

1968 Tigers

my boys

1968 is known in our house “as the year mom met Norm Cash”. Our neighbor was the sports editor for the Detroit Free Press. AND THERE I MET NORM CASH.

I would love love love to see my Tigers and the Cardinals in the series.

" AND THERE I MET NORM CASH."

Cool.

Seems to be a lot of Tiger fans on this web site.

I don’t like Feliciano’s version at all. I am more of a purist, tales of a drinking song notwithstanding. Whitney’s version is great, but she had a distinct advantage in that it was lip synched.

I would just LOVE to see a Tigers/Cardinals match up for the series.

Ecchhh…no Cardinals.

5-part harmony is awesome.

Coincidentally, Lergnom, Feliciano sang the anthem at the Giants-Cards came earlier this week:

I loved his 1968 version, and I was the right age for it at the time. It was a treat to hear his seasoned, mellowed version. I guess I’m the right age for it now :-)

We were treated to Tony Bennett’s singing of “God Bless America” during the seventh inning stretch. No one sang with him until the last line. Because everyone was in awe of his marvelous voice.

Yep, I agree on the Tigers, but I just had enough of the Cards’ late innings heroics. :)

Xiggi, :)…

Tony Bennett is a national treasure.

By the way, is the recipe for getting into the World Series to win the weakest division or to just squeak into the playoffs? Winning a bunch of games during the regular season does not seem to pay huge dividends.

The New York Giants’ syndrome is catching on!

There is something about those NY Giants. They know how to win the big games.

They crushed the 49ers. :(

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep
