Potential for haas?

Hey everyone,

I feel pretty down now, I think i might have gotten 2 B’s now in non pre req classes. Is my haas dream over? Should I even bother applying? ;(

It’s not over but you dug yourself a hole. Now you can only make up for it by getting straight A’s and having amazing ecs and essays.

My bro had a C in Algebra 2, B in pre-cal, B in Calculus 1 and a B in business law. He got into HAAS with a 3.8 and top notch essay + ec. Keep in mind, your ec and essay matters A LOT since tons of students have a strong GPA.

@totaldj did you brother recently get in? im just afraid because there are so many more people eligible to apply, making the competition tougher :(

There aren’t that many eligible people, actually. When I applied a few months back, 3/4 of students hadn’t fulfilled the requirements and were rejected right off the bat. Among the six people that I know who applied to Haas, only one was rejected, and he didn’t get in any other school of consequence either, so it was probably a stats issue. The odds of successfully transferring to Haas are really quite good in my opinion, even with a less than sparkling GPA.

@sonomono Actually for the 2012 school year they are taking some of the requirements out which would make a whole variety of different students eligible. which isn’t preferable for students like me because i kind of depend on the weeding out of non eligible students in order for me to have a better chance.

plus did you get accepted sonomono?

@sonomono It really depends. You might’ve applied from a “target” school. My CCC had over ten people get into haas this year. All of them were amazing individuals though. Other schools might have less competitive people.

And yes, applicants for Fall 2012 will face less eligibility issues due to the prereq and breadth changes.

@ investment

Is de anza a target school for haas?

plus do you know anyone from your cc that might of had 3.8-3.9 gpa?

Everyone who got in had a 3.8+. Yes I would consider De Anza to be a target school. I went there and about 12 people including 3 international students got in this year. International students are like 10% of Haas transfers so that’s saying a lot.

Wow really you went to de anza? The numbers make me feel a little better, but the thing is those people probably had crazy EC’s plus the pre reqs are being cut.
How did the business club people do?

They didn’t have crazy ECs, just had good grades (most important thing) and decent activities. Haas is overrated. Just do your best in your classes and worry about ECs later. If you get another B, it might be over.

2 people from the old business club got in. There is a newer club (social entrepreneurship or something) and I don’t know if people transferred yet.

@investment So do is it like preferred to finish pre reqs before fall of application? I know you have till spring to finish pre reqs, but i might not be able to finish pre reqs before fall is that a bad thing?

it is highly suggested you have MOST of your pre-reqs done by the end of fall. If you have 1 in the spring, that wont hinder you in anyway.

My brother got in 2 years ago. The competition was still tough none of the less. Actually it was tougher, why? Because calculus 2 wasn’t a requirement and the acceptance rate was around 7%.

Actually your statement is completely invalid, this year will be the toughest year as the breadth requirements are no longer required. Meaning those 40% of applicants who are thrown out each year due to not meeting the breadth requirements are now eligible.

Wow for reals, that sucks. Thanks for correcting me though. UCs are getting strict and increasing TAG requirements (3.5 for UCSD!), it’s kind of a shock that HAAS is still going easy on applicants. Oh well!

@totaldj how is HAAS going easy on applicants? they have a 6-7% acceptance rate and now they cut breadth requirements its bound to get tougher right?

Turns out i may be wrong about the second B. but none the less Haas is difficult. I might have more then one pre req in the winter and spring semester, should i apply for econ instead?

By going easy I meant UCB requiring less courses for admission to HAAS. This means more applicants will be able to apply.

Just for the record , I did get in haas; coming from de anza college as an international. I suspect that they’re accepting more in order to more money. I know at least three other internationals who got in.
