I’ve had mine for over 40 years. My mom was into Amway at the time and they came from them. Politics aside, time for them to go.
I’d like my new set to be nonstick, can go in the dishwasher, have stay cool handles and don’t want to spend a fortune (they don’t need to last another 40 years).
SO many different brands. Any suggestions?
I prefer to buy individual pieces. I have a Le Creuset Dutch oven, a small nonstick for eggs, a large stainless All Clad for every day use, a small stainless sauce pot, and so forth.
I don’t put my nonstick in the DW, and I like having some pans with metal handles so they can go into the oven.
I have bought pans from the All Clad outlet, Target, Macys, QVC and everywhere in between!
Sadly no matter what the manufacturer says, putting your nonstick pans in the dishwasher will ensure they won’t last more than 3-4 years (forget 40). You only need nonstick in skillets when you are cooking delicate proteins like fish fillets and egg dishes so two different sizes of skillets will be plenty.
All Clad is hands down, the best cookware made in the US (even if it tends to be pricey). For nonstick skillets, I think OXO makes very good ones that with care, should last 5-10 years. The handles are heatproof up to 430 degrees and they say they are dishwasher safe (if you insist on putting them in there). They are very reasonably priced too.
All Clad & Lodge (cast iron). Big fans of both, although we rarely cook anymore!
All Clad for sure. They will last you a lifetime.
Scanpan is the best for nonstick. We use ours everyday. I think their lifetime is longer than other nonstick, but I do replace them every few years.
LeCrueset and Staub are great, but super heavy.
I have a couple of All Clad pieces…and I love them. If you don’t want to spend a fortune…Try these:
Friends who have Tramontina have been very happy with them.
I second the recommendation for OXO Good Grips nonstick frypans. Amazon carries them in 8", 10" and 12". I own all 3, and bought a set for my daughter as well.
But they really should not go in the dishwasher-- and there is no need anyway, as they clean up so easily. I wipe greasy residue out of the pan with a paper towel before washing it, which saves on dish soap.
I bought into the hype and bought the our place pan. https://fromourplace.com/?msclkid=2da04e693dfa1a9f96ea11d102616778&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=brand_new&utm_term=our%20place&utm_content=brand_core_exact
I guess I’m that person. It’s not going to be here until the end of December so we will see if it’s that magic pan!
I have one 10” deep skillet, one sauce pan and one Dutch oven. All Calphalon. The skillet I bought during a Black Friday special, the saucepan from TJ Maxx and the Dutch oven was a gift. The skillet is getting beat up so I’m replacing that. I always hand wash.
I have a soft spot for Calphalon, before they were sold I knew someone high up in the organization so it’s a silly reason but it’s a reason. Calphalon was much better before they became mass produced though.
I did a lot of research about 6-7 years ago (to replace the Calphalon I had for decades). I cook often and I’m a pretty good home cook. I was planning to go with All Clad but after all the research, I went with Tramontina and have been very happy with it. It’s like 1/3 the price of All Clad, maybe cheaper.
My mom has All Clad and I’ve cooked on it and I think Tramontina is just as good. I actually like the handles better.
I also have a couple enameled cast iron dutch ovens and a Lodge cast iron skillet. And a T-Fal nonstick frying pan. Different surfaces are good for different cooking methods.
We cook a lot, and our kitchen workhorse pans are a Le Creuset Dutch oven, two Oxo nonstick skillets, a stockpot and a couple saucepans (one Tramontina and two All Clad I purchased from TJ Maxx, agree that the quality is very similar).
I am not much of a cook, that’s my disclaimer. In my household, we’ve had some very expensive cookwares because of my ex-husband. I recently bought this pan, https://www.amazon.com/Circulon-10866-Ultimum-Aluminum-Nonstick/dp/B01NCVTHJ4. I have to say I have liked a pan so much. It is very easy to clean and heat is very evenly distributed. I love to make a fry egg without breaking it, and bacons are perfectly cooked. I have grilled a steak on it. I still have some very expensive pans (didn’t give all of them to my ex), but I don’t use them now.
We have two Le Creuset Dutch ovens that we use quite a bit. The other pans we use most often are Viking stainless steel pots. Also have Scanpans for non-stick fry pans. They are great, but you can’t put them in the oven.
Our circulon set needed to be replaced and I kept reading about how great stainless was. I purchased a set by Caphalon and the first time we used it I couldn’t get it clean. Since it was from Costco, I returned it and set out to find a non-stick set. I ended up with this all-clad set and have been very happy with it. The price seemed good too.
Too late to edit but I wanted to note for the OP that the handles do not get hot (we were surprised). Also, I have chosen to hand wash them which has been very easy. I don’t recall if the instructions said they were dishwasher safe or not.
We use a cheapo random ceramic-surface nonstick pan from BBB for eggs and it’s held up better than any previous expensive teflon pan we’ve had. So take a look at Greenpan and other ceramics.
In a fit of madness last year I bought a hexclad (https://hexclad.com/) which basically claims to be indestructible non-stick with the properties of stainless. I’d describe it more as a hybrid - it’s like an almost-nonstick pan that you can also use for high heat searing/browning like you would with stainless, and without the worries of the non-stick coating eventually degrading. I actually got it specifically for browning things like scallops and steaks (after sous vide), and blackening salmon (again post sous vide) and it works great for those tasks with super-easy cleanup but it’s not quite as non-stick as true non-stick. And it gets bonus points for looking super cool. There’s plenty of cheaper knockoffs on Amazon and it looks like some of the big names have also copied the design.
For stainless I have a couple Calphalon and they tend to get some odd whitish discoloration sometimes, but it cleans up easily with BKF. Oddly enough my random no-name stainless pot never has the issue. Also, I don’t know if I became a better cook or modern stainless has improved, but I find my newer stainless significantly easier to clean up than my really old stainless (new and old are both Calphalon, so apples to apples comparison).
I cook a lot and primarily use ancient magnalite plus two cast iron skillets. I do have a Le Creuset dutch oven but rarely use it because its too big for just the 3 of us. I also have one Farberware skillet left over from a set I got 30+ years ago when I graduated from college.
I was looking at getting some nonstick but, after researching I’ve decided to buy Matfer Black Carbon Steel instead. I’m worried about ingesting the coating on nonstick pans.
I have a mismatch too. Le Creuset, calphalon, lodge cast iron, etc… I don’t use non stick either because of coating concerns.
I have All Clad, Calphalon, and Le Creuset and all have worked well for years. The nonstick surface has worn off on the Calphalon but not the All Clad which I believe has a lifetime guarantee. Also, I never put any pans in the dishwasher. It is reported that dishwasher use can damage nonstick surfaces.
This keeps coming up on my social media feed. Anyone tried it? https://fromourplace.com/products/always-essential-cooking-pan?gclid=Cj0KCQiAkuP9BRCkARIsAKGLE8XRoT8D9QKOkH-5ElMuyhDi1J4DhnFyMZvMrvZNG7n50eUWc8dQdO0aAoxiEALw_wcB
I just ordered it. It’s back ordered until the end of December. I did research it and USA Today gave it a good review
