What do you guys think of a top Pre-calc class being given SAT review packets? We have folders with an SAT 1 side, and an SAT 2 math iic side. We are given packets with practice problems to do, and literature on the tests. I thought that I was going to be learning Pre-calc, not taking an SAT review class. Granted, it isn’t a very big part of the class, but it disturbs me that “teaching to the test” has gone to the point that teachers teach to tests not even linked to the school’s funding; they voluntarily slow down to teach a test. Not everyone will even take the iic. In an AP class, it is expected that the teacher will emphasize the test, but the material in the class is realated ot the test, whereas pre-calc isn’t related to the SAT 1.
Alright, done ranting, what do you think?

I think it’s fine. In fact, I’d be kinda happy that the teacher knows that the SAT may be a stressful time for some people, and is giving them some prep for it. If you think the SAT is a cakewalk, then hey, easy homework points. It’s pretty win-win if you ask me. I think your teacher is trying to empathize, not trying to “teach to the test.”

As long as the teacher still covers the expected pre-calc curriculum, I don’t see what the problem is. It will only benefit most of the students.

phlogistonfreak i know what you mean…i hate when teachers teach to a test, but if she still does the actual pre calc stuff then i dont have such a huge problem with it

Hopefully this will just be a small part of the curriculum, or a small unit. So far i’m more bothered in principle than in the actual time lost in class, although we got another packet tonight.
