Pre-K Admissions in the Boston area in prep schools

Does anyone have a sense or any good resources of what the Pre-K Admissions/waitlists are like at Prep schools in the great Boston area?

We are relocating to the Boston area from London and need to quickly find out where our son will start school in Sept. We’d like him to start in a Pre-K program where will continute on into Kindergarden.

In London there is not a lot of competition at this level and most schools have a lot of open availability. Just wondering what it’s like as I expect crazy waitlists and not getting our top choices.

I do not pretend to know exactly what the landscape looks like going into summer for Pre-K Admissions. I do know many of the local area schools have had issues in some recent years of filling classrooms in lower grades. The cost can be viewed as too much for earlier grades and many public schools do very well in the early years. You might try calling the Admissions offices of schools and depending how far out from Boston. Nashoba Brooks, Shore Country Day, Brookwood, Glen Urquhart, Pike School, might be worth trying.

The Boston Area is a large metropolitan area, with a lot of suburban towns, some of which have excellent public schools (which are free to those who live there). It’s common to pay for private nursery schools, but a lot of families seeking the best education for their children will then put them in public school K-5 or K-8 in a good suburb, such as Lexington or Newton. They may or may not continue in the very good public high schools in these towns, or may move over to private day schools or private prep boarding schools.

The point is, it’s not necessary to get your child into the most exclusive nursery to feed into the most exclusive elementary school to most exclusive middle school to most exclusive prep school. If you want to live within Boston, yes. But if you’re planning on living in a suburb, if you choose based upon schools, public school is a very reasonable option. Take a look at greatschools.com which will have ratings and reviews of private and public schools, and a lot of information about demographics of the student body.
