pre-med classes/prep for mcats

hey, i’ve been advised to choose classes to boost GPA as an underclassmen. but these classes, i think, usually don’t prepare ppl for the MCATs. i haven’t been taking any ges and don’t plan to in the near future (except my freshman cluster) since i think it won’t help my MCATs. but is this the wrong thing to do, to take hard-core south campus classes and not get a great GPA just to prep for the MCATs.

is there a happy medium? please correct me if i made a wrong statement.

You should’ve taken a mix of GEs with your science classes, and then just take a MCAT prep class over the summer (or just study hardcore for MCATs over summer). Classes such as Chem 153A provide a nice refresher before going into MCAT.

WOW you are pre med? A LOT of people are going to die.

im just curious about who or what you are talking to to get your information? (this is out of sheer entertainment and not because the information is of any remote value because it clearly isnt)

oh dwm… what will we do with you?!

:(

DWM…Let’s have lunch sometime!

What is this tomfoolery?! Give it up, Puppet! My love for you - hahahaha! Does not exist! Be gone will you?!

Invisible ink is overrated.
…and so is Puppet.
kekekekeke!

FROM LAUGHTER!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!

i<3mme2.

haha my source: mom. poor dwm. :(

pre-med is gradually withering me away. if i mix my schedule with some north campus classes for a balance then perhaps life’ll be better.

^your mom has been giving you bad advice. to say the least. not that the board hasnt expressed that already.

yea, definitely get a balance. you shouldve been able to finish science prereqs in a bit over 2 years, had you taken about 2 science classes and one GE per quarter.

i was guessing it was a random pre-med gunner boosting their own admission chances, but its actually worse that the info is coming from your mom

for mcat: LS 2-4, Physics 6A-6C, Chem14 series. THAT"S IT!!!

i would follow the advice you were given. gpa is the most important factor when you apply for med school. aside from the above listed classes no class will prepare you significantly better for the MCAT

yeah i’m thinking about being a north campus major and taking some south campus courses…eventually taking the MCAT or the DAT…who knows i’m still a young’n!

can anyone else confirm bruinboy’s post…those are the only prep courses you need at ucla to feel “ready” for the mcat?

much love homies

have a great summer!

excited to-be sophomore

I’d recommend 153a to add to bruinboy’s list.

Okay, so to restate and answer your question DWM, this is what I believe you are stating/asking.

You were advised to take easy “GPA boosters”, in this case you consider those classes to be GEs.

However, despite being advised to do the above, you considered taking “south-campus” classes, so that you can prep for the MCAT… even though you realize it might hurt your GPA.

You come to us asking if there is a happy medium. You seem to be asking whether you should do this OR that. Well there is no “this OR that”.

What you will do if you want to have any chance of getting into med school is to do BOTH your “GPA boosting” GE’s AND those “hardcore south campus” classes. Why? Because those “hardcore south campus” classes are REQUIRED for med school and those “GPA boosting” GE’s are REQUIRED to graduate. So far I haven’t heard of anyone getting into med school without graduating here at UCLA, but correct me if I am wrong.

So you see, there is no “happy medium” You’re just going to have to do it ALL.

I don’t mean to put you down in any way, but you really need to get your **** together. It seems as though you have absolutely no idea what is going on as a pre med.

but you also have to take math 3a, 3b, and 3c in order to take physics 6 right?

Course Description: Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour; laboratory, two hours. Enforced requisites: Mathematics 3A, 3B. Enforced corequisite: Mathematics 3C. Not open for credit to students with credit for course 6AH. Motion, Newton laws, energy, linear and angular momentum, rotation, equilibrium, gravity, biological applications. P/NP or letter grading.

^ i took the entire 6 series without 3C (i did have AP credit for A and B though)

interesting.

some ppl say that the honors series for physics (6AH, ETC) doesnt prep well for the MCATs compared to the regular series. to what extent do you think that’s true?

So, there IS such a thing as a happy medium? i’m confused.

i can’t find the honors series for physics in the online registrar sched of classes. where is it?
