Precinct worker?

Hi! I was wondering if someone could help me:

I will be earning ~100 for working at a voting booth. I’m gonna spend a total 18 hrs working and training in the next week. I’m unsure of where to put this on my FAFSA and CSS. Obviously, it’s not a “real” job, but I still made income. It seems to me like this is an odd job, like randomly babysitting from time to time. Do I need to write it down? I mean, it’s only $100, and compared to college costs that wouldn’t even buy me a book, right? Ideas?

Thanks!

you put it on income- just like any other income.
you will be paid minimum wage so it should be higher than $100.

Yes it is income and you will have to report it. It should not have a negative affect on your financial aid as you have an income protection of a little over $3200 before your income will start to increase your EFC.

You will probably have some taxes deducted so make sure you do a return next year to get your overpaid taxes refunded to you.

My guess is that you will receive a w-2 or 1099 for this precinct work. My guess also is that you do not receive these for babysitting here and there (you should receive a 1099 if you are something like a nanny employed regularly). $100 isn’t going to have much of an impact on your financial aid status.

as a Seattle precinct worker my experience has been that you won’t get a 1099 for this pay- so keep your check stub. However- it does show community involvement and can help with getting scholarships that reward such.

I don’t get a 1099 for mine. And no, I don’t report it anywhere as income. It would be my only earned income, so i wouldn’t have to file a return based on that. There are no deductions from it, and it is most certainly not minimum wage.
