Prep school interview prep

I have an (unfortunatly) off-campus interview next Monday for Exeter. What should I do to prepare?

Good luck on your interview. We haven’t been to our interviews yet, or I would share tips. Will you be able to visit the campus later?

im also applying to boarding school. out of curiosity, what’s ur academic profile like? (ssat scores, gpas, ets, sports, etc)

IluvA - I’m a sophomore right now. Stats:
Trig/Analytic H: B
German III: A
PE (Prep for sport): A
Band: A
Chem H: B+ (probably A- by end of semester)
Advanced English: A
History: A

(last year’s grades were similar, with an A+ rather than B+ in science)
These are the hardest classes offered by my high school (except German III, as we go up to 4/5/6AP, which is all one class, but I should be in German II this year - I self-studied over the summer and skipped up. :-D)

EC’s:
I’m a very music-oriented person:
-> I play trumpet in the band and am about to start taking lessons, I’m in a brass quintet and a trumpet trio/quartet.
-> I play saxophone in the jazz band, as well as taking lessons and being a leader of a saxophone quartet, which was invited to compete at the state-level Solo & Ensemble festival last year; I won a school district-wide scholarship on saxophone, and went to jazz camp twice over the summer!
-> I run Cross Country (JV) and am running in the Footlocker Western Regionals this December
-> I throw discus and shot put for track, as well as occasionally sprinting and high-jumping. I am most likely going to be on Varsity this year
->I tutor two German I students during my prep.
->I like to write in my spare time - I entered (and got 3rd) in a local story contest last year.
->During the summer, I am a Counselor-in-Training at a science camp, and hope this year to be hired as a counselor.

SSAT:
I’m actually not taking SSATs. As I’m applying for entrance to 11th grade, I took the PSATs instead, but I havn’t gotten results yet.

Recs:
I’m sure I can get a great EC and school admin rec. I should be able to get an excellent English one. I am in a school with a fairly strong math program, so math will probably be my worst rec. However, I am fairly confident in my essay writing ability. :-)

Last thing: My dad was in the Exeter class of 1975. I don’t know if this will help/hurt me, but I figured I’d say it anyway.
Anything else you’d like to know??

(and after i’ve written all that, any idea what my chances are?)

if ur dad attended exeter, it should definitely help u

First of all, think about what you would like the interviewer to know about you. What are you interested? What do you do with your free time? Why would other prep school students enjoy your company?

A classic question I have heard of being asked in several interviews is (to the child) “Whose idea was it to apply to boarding school, yours or your parents’?” and (to the parents) “Whose idea was it to apply to boarding school, yours or your child’s?” According to what I have heard (we have not had any interviews yet), both parents and child are interviewed by boarding schools, and they are interviewed SEPARATELY.

You can get a lot of other information just by using College Confidential’s search function and looking for threads mentioning Exeter, Andover, boarding schools, SSAT, prep schools, etc. (which is probably how you found the threads to which you posted your repeated questions).

Good luck in your interviews. Don’t worry about them too much. Dare to be yourself.

Anybody else??? I also need advice on interviews and the whole process in general…

Actually, I would be glad to hear from other students on this same issue, but I can pass on the tip that Andover’s Web site has a [FAQ on interviews](http://www.andover.edu/admission/faq_interview.htm).

I hope everyone with been-there-done-thats will share them here.

Yes, Interviews are done separately, students and parents. It is true that they do ask who’s idea was it to attend boarding school. Alot of ?'s that reveals one’s maturity.

no offense, heerothewizard, but i meant ppl who had been accepted 2 bs, wut their academic profile had been like wen they applied. its ok, though. lol.

haha, sorry IluvA. :-P
