Can somebody tell me which reporter is providing the best twitter coverage? The people I am finding have up to ten minute lags…
I think allymanning is pretty good.
Also Susan Zalkind.
Cross is over. Closings tomorrow morning.
Agree w/ above plus Jess Bidgood andJeremy Blackman
I can think of some more questioning I would have asked if I was the prosecutor…
Has anyone reported whether Labrie came across as believable/likeable/arrogant/etc? It’s impossible to assess his demeanor from tweets. With the victim, they supplied some emotional descriptions.
@doschicos Me too!!! Like…your roommate testified he told you not to go after the girl. Did he try to? talk you out of it? He testified he has a sister who is a student at SPS. True? He testified the girl is a friend of his sister’s. True. So, you agree that he tried to talk you out of going after this girl, who was a friend of his kid sister ?
But when you came back from the encounter and he asked you if you’d had sex with her, you told him yes, though you hadn’t, to impress him!!!
Agreed@prospect1. But I want to see video.
From the tweets it sounds as if he did as well for himself as she did for herself.
I still think that guilty of the misdemeanor sexual assault without sex offender registration is the most likely verdict.
Do we know these questions weren’t asked? These twitter feeds are surely not a complete transcript of the proceedings…
Also, I’m thinking that is the prosecution did not go into certain areas, it has to be because they were afraid of the answers they might get. As a juror, I would be curious why those areas were not explored with Labrie, and it would make me tend to favor his version.
@jonri, video would be really useful.
So does anyone find his testimony believable?
So today he states that he decided not to have sex with her because he knew that would be a bad thing for him. Yet, he lies to his best friends, his roommate of 3 years, he doesn’t correct the younger students in the dorm who are high fiving him and congratulating him? He doesn’t bring it up with the victim right away when she sends an email about condom usage? For someone who reports knowing it is wrong to engage in sex with a minor, who has had training on consent and statutory rape, wouldn’t one assume a prudent - and by all accounts very intelligent - young man, one who has expressed concern about just this issue, would want to set the record straight right away? Would not want gossip to be out there?
Also, does anyone believe he actually forgot he had a condom on because he was in such a rush to go see a capella? Or were there other reasons for a hasty exit.
Perhaps the prosecution is confident enough to not feel like they need to pound him for hours. Interested to know if this is a positive thing for the state or a negative.
@Doschicos, where did you find the video clips of the defendant testifying?
I’ve been watching the local news. WMUR and NECN.
@dischicos, assuming for the moment that he is describing the encounter accurately, you really think he is going to go back to the dorm and tell the guys, “Well, I had a premature ejaculation, and then I started to lose my erection, and I thought no, this isn’t what I imagined, and I just wanted to get out of there.”? In what universe?
I think that the idea that she would lie to the nurse in order to avoid wrecking her sister’s graduation is completely plausible. I think the idea that he would lie to the guys to avoid looking like a fool or a dork is equally plausible.
Frankly, it sounds to me as if they were both sexually inexperienced–her more so–and they got into a situation they didn’t know how to deal with.
Of course, he was older, he initiated the situation, and it was (almost) completely his responsibility. No one is a mind reader, but from what I’ve read I think that she believes she was raped, and he knows that what he did–even if he didn’t actually penetrate her–was wrong.
@Consolation - He didn’t need to go into embarassing details with his friends, just needed to tell them no sex took place, “we stopped at x base”, “we just messed around a little” or whatever. No loss of face in that. No looking like a fool or dork. Weighing other people knowing you had sex with a minor vs. admitting you did not have sex, I’d think many would choose the latter, IF that was truly a concern of his, both AT THE TIME as well as after the fact to save his butt.
@doschicos, hindsight is 20/20.
Hindsight might be 20/20 but he was claiming “divine inspiration” at the time, right? That his concern for not doing the wrong thing was at the forefront of his mind when deciding to stop and leave? So, what happened at the a capella concert - the time between the encounter and going back to the dorm - to not keep that 20/20 vision? to want to lie to his best buddies despite the risks involved?
Well, HE says that he started hearing from others that he had sex with her, and presumed SHE was spreading that story first. it is plausible that, at that point, he felt she wanted that to be the story and so he went with it (plus it puffed him up to the guys as a side benefit). Still, nothing gets around the fact that he solicited this encounter with a 15 year old, in my mind.
He looks terrible. The guy is a creep and all of a sudden he does the right thing? I don’t think so.
Forgot he was wearing a condom? Really? Is that what he said? I think I would know if I was wearing a condom but its been awhile.
There are men on this jury.
The above is an opinion or this came out in court this clearly?
