Prep School Rape

Poor Brock. Such a shame.

He still can petition the California Supreme Court to consider the appeal. I suppose his parents will continue to spend money to try to clear his name - I think any technically proficient lawyer would suggest he do that.

Stick a fork…

Has anyone read her book?

Bad week for Owen’s trial lawyer J W Carney since another of his high-profile clients (Whitey Bulger) also finally faced justice…

From the link in post 1942 (his lawyer) “The computer felony law, as now interpreted by the NH Supreme Court, can ensnare any senior in high school who communicates through their phone, tablet or laptop with a freshman in high school and invites them on a date,” Rancourt said.”.

He seems to miss the point. Seniors in high school really shouldn’t be inviting freshmen on dates.

@VeryHappy , I have. Not terrifically well written and certainly curated in a way that matches how she has processed her experience, which makes sense and is to be expected.

What was interesting to me were the social dynamics. I know someone who had a very similar experience as a younger sibling of a popular girl who also got caught up in some of the same kinds of dorm dynamics and girl politics . She did not end up in the same situation (obviously!), but ended up leaving for another school. There are kids who don’t encounter these pressures, kids who do and find ways to deal with/dismiss them, and then kids, who do and are damaged by them. For that alone, I think it’s a good read for kids who are thinking of BS and their parents.

Seems like the book might be worth a read, esp for students so they can understand there will always be peers who do the wrong thing. It’s so important for kids to understand and protect themselves from predators whether they are 15,20,50 or 90 years old. I’m happy he must register as a sex offender. People in every community have the right to know about predators. That will follow him his entire life, as her experience will follow her.
For too many years, these stories have been swept under the rug ( as one article states he also done this to another girl and was protected by powerful people. So he obviously didn’t learn his lesson).

Judge denies Owen Labrie’s bid for reduced sentence.

“Superior Court Judge Larry M. Smukler denied Labrie’s motion for an amended sentence Tuesday afternoon, said Carole Alfano, a spokeswoman for the New Hampshire court system, in an e-mail. Smukler ordered Labrie to report to the Merrimack County House of Corrections at 9 a.m. on Dec. 26 to serve the remainder of his sentence, which currently stands at nine months, according to Alfano.”

It’s crazy how long this has been going on - 4.5 years. Victim is now 20. I’m sure Smukler is more than fed up with it.

It’s still not over for the victim. Her name will be mentioned again when he leaves jail. Yes, she agreed to putting her name out there but it will still be damaging to her future. People are judgmental. Hugs to CP.

Owen reported to jail today:

While I don’t deny MaterS’s statement that reporting the rape will be damaging in some ways to Chessie in the future, I think it is utterly reprehensible that it should be so. It will in no way be damaging to her in any way that she might overlap with me.

People ought to be judgmental about Owen and not about the victim.

The special prosecutor in the Larry Nassar case has presented his report that of the approximately 280+ victims of Nassar in Michigan (perhaps excluding some victims treated only at Twistars), 13 reported the abuse. Of them, only two even had an actual investigation started on their behalfs, and neither reached an accurate conclusion.

If more people reported assaults, the scope of the problem nationally would be better understood, and perhaps people would be less judgmental.

“it will still be damaging to her future.”

We don’t know this. The only people with the power to damage her future are high-flying educators and employers. It’s not at all clear to me that those people will discriminate against her going forward. She’s a published author and a national leader. I have lots of students who disclose histories of mental illness, assault, etc. and get great admissions and job search results even without becoming respected advocates.

But do such students have to apply to more places to get a desired result, compared to similar students in terms of typical credentials but without the histories of mental illness, assault, etc.?

Not necessarily.

Hannah I realize you on the other side, but from the Vanderbilt rape victim’s impact statement (in part): In this age of technology, anyone I ever meet in my personal or professional life can learn I am a rape victim and the details of the case before I’ve even fully introduced myself to them. There is no way for me to even know if any given person I interact with has done so. This is something I now have to expect for the rest of my life.

I am not on any “other side.” I don’t even perceive there to be sides among reasonable people on this issue. Defense attorneys are not in favor of rape.

“Damage to her future” does not follow from the fact that people can find out that she is a victim. I agree that these survivors are outed forever, and that they would prefer not to be known for this. We just don’t know yet whether that will damage their futures.

I think the fact that it is one of the first things people will learn about her for the rest of her life is damaging. Way to spin it, though.

I don’t understand this attack. Hanna is offering an optimistic view that Chessie will not be harmed, on balance, by people learning about her history. Some people, when learning who she is, will think oh, yuck, victim. Others will think, oh, yeah, I remember hearing about the brave survivor who brought that punk to justice, brava, can’t wait to meet her. Who can say whether the impact will be on net positive or negative? Why the attack on Hanna?
