Prep school reputations.

hotchkiss has much better admits to middlebury, williams, pomona, swarthmore and those than the counterpart national universities…actually …for some reason…those are the dream schools of most people here than HYPS… we believe that’s because of hotchkiss’ relatively remote locale and close interaction of the student body(since there’s really nothing around) compared to the others’(apparently most people who chose to come to hotchkiss picked hotchkisss becoz they like it the way the school is, so it’s much more likely they feel the same about colleges)… so you cant just compare ivies/stanford/MIT…throw in middlebury, pomona, williams and swarthmore at least 10 of them …since u hv 8 ivies and stanford and mit

bearcats, i agree SPS is not beyond reproach. While were add it maybe we should include Groton. I have not heard of any improprieties from Hotchkiss.I’m talking more recently like last ten years or so. I’m not going to defend the problems SPS has had and in fact I was not aware that the headmaster had a direct effect on the endowment. However, I do believe in second chances.

Bearcats, I do not have a child that has ever attended SPS so my opinions come from a somewhat unbiased opinion. I think both schools are great and I also believe there are many fine schools. Although reputation and prestige are fine, many of them are made up in the minds of people who put more importance in them then need be. You chose Hotchkiss, babouche chose SPS, my D chose Middlesex, for all of you it made sense and these schools have their strengths and weaknesses. The common ground is a superior education and no school has the patent on superior education.

bearcat, please reference your SPS info. the endowment in 2004 was 334 mil,2005 was 359 mil, and i believe it is presently around 380 mil. I have never heard anything about 600 mil and to think it would drop 200 odd million in a couple of years is absurd.

just found this also,“over the last five years ended 30 june 2004, our investment returns have produced an annualized return of 6.81% as compared to the average return of 3.9% as published for college and university endowments of $100 million to $500 million.” from SPS literature.

bearcats, somewhere I pointed this out a long time ago. Yes it appears that Hotchkiss students have a propensity for the liberal arts colleges. I did notice that only Middlebury was in H’s top ten of school choices. I did not see willaims or pomona. they still do matric to the ivies, just not as many as other schools. No bigee…They do seem to have a love affair with Georgetown

catg, if bearcats is correct, the headmaster must have taken a boat load.lol
Is it possible that he speaks of some longer time frame? I have only been following bs’s since 2003 or so.

It is more likely he doesn’t know what he is talking about. We can await his source.

i really dont know why so many people here wants to go to georgetown…it’s usually the super preppy crowd though (preppy college for preppy people, i find georgetown really preppy after I visited…maybe just me tho)…

i think it’s matriculation rate only counts people who actually enrolled…i dunno but students here are just not as ivy hogging as many other schools… We see too many people ditching HYPS MIT for other schools…i know at least 6 of them personally in the last 2 years and i m sure there are a lot more…my proctor…ditched yale for swat…this super popular guy in my math class ditched harvard for UNC-ch(WOW)…the funniest one was another kid from hong kong dumped MIT for lol…eh…georgetown (BIG LAUGH OUT LOUD…dont get me wrong …georgetown is a very neat school but georgetown over MIT??)…i think it’s due to the college office effort to encourage people to look out of the box(ivies and the prestigious) and go for the school that fits

but ya…different school for different peopl

bearcats, congrats on the field hockey team again this year.

lol btw about the SPS thingy sorry about that lol i just called my friend who told me this and it’s sheer exaggeration…there were claims that the headmaster and trustees “stole” part of the endowment through “poor investments” but 600M is pure exaggeration…sorry lol

Aw come on, are you serious? Not to worry, next time choose better sources.

lol by the way i actually almost chose st paul until i visited haha i just didnt like the people and atmosphere there

That’s fair, sps is definitely not for everyone. My D included.

What was wrong with the people and atmosphere?

jonathan1, you already know the answer to that. It did not move him like Hotchkiss moved him.

That’s not really the answer to my question…

that’s actually the answer…always trust ur gut feeling…u know it once u r there

So “your gut” told you that you didn’t like the people? What was it that you didn’t like about the students at St. Paul’s?

jonathan1, for many students, there will be a moment that just moves them to know that this is the place for them. who know’s that school maybe the one you least expect.
