Does going to a selective college prep school increase chances of getting into schools? What else can I do to get into a good college? I’m only a freshman and my schools has a pretty amazing matriculation record, but without that, I don’t really have much. I’m bad at anything involving physical movement, so any sports achievements are out of the question. I’m not especially talented anywhere…I have a HUGE passion for musical theater and Broadway, but I’m not impressive on the performing end of it so I’m thinking maybe I can direct that passion towards producing but outside of that I don’t see how this passion could do anything to appeal to colleges. I also have a large portion of my heart doled out to debating and I’m actually relatively good at it so maybe I coud use that? Grades wise I’m okay, straight A’s, a few A+‘s here and there. I do a lot of community service - singing and volunteering at old persons’ homes and I contribute to the Prison Library Project. Another thing that won’t help is that fact that I am Asian-American. I want to major in something humanities related, perhaps American Studies, as I love the humanities with the burning power of a thousand suns. What else can I be doing right now to help myself? I totally strayed from my topic - I guess I’m just another desperate freshman! :o)

There you go. You should focus on production. A prep school isn’t going to help you get into college if you are afraid to do something that you have a passion for (i.e. theater). Public schools have a lot of theater (at least mine does), so maybe take drama or something.

If you want to major in humanities, you can minor in theater. There are so many options and combinations. Just try something!

Oh my god. Same. Everyone here is so smart (especially the international students). I’m not sure how I got in the school I did, but I really hope they won’t kick me out or “not invite me back”.

I’m at a prep school, and there is a great matriculation into top colleges from here, but to be honest, I think that most of the people here that go to these great colleges would have gotten in regardless of where they were. Our school has an amazing college counseling program, so that may help quite a bit.

Will a prep school increase your chances of getting into a specific college? No. Will the educational/co-curricular opportunities available at a prep school make you a more attractive candidate for colleges? Potentially, but that really depends upon what alternatives are available to you.

I go to St. Paul’s in New Hampshire and we have a really amazing theater program. We have directing and producing classes if that is what you’re interested in specifically. While going to a prep school doesn’t guarantee a spot at an ivy league, you will receive an fantastic education. PM if you have any questions
