Previous College History in China - Report or not?

I am asking this for a friend. My friend is a F-1 student from China. She went to college there for 2 years majoring in International Trade. She is now studying at a community college and wants to transfer to a university to study industrial engineering. However, she is not planning to transfer any credits from her 2 years of college study in China. Should she tell the US university that she attended college in China? Any pros and cons of reporting or not reporting?

Btw, she will be 23 when she applies for admission at the US university. She has gotten good grades at her Chinese university but only mediocre grades in high school.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The disadvantage of reporting is that a lot of US colleges don’t let you apply as a freshman when you’ve already stated college anywhere- instead you have to apply for a transfer.

However I reckon not reporting comes with more pressing problems. For one thing, how will your friend explain away the two years after high school that she spent in the college? Also if her grades in high school are mediocre, it makes little sense to hide the fact that she did well in college.

So I would say it’s better to report the fact that she’s been to college, but it does mean she has to do her research carefully and find a good mix of colleges that allow her to apply as a freshman.

By the way, any particular reason why she does not wish to transfer credit? Two years of credit is a lot to give up on!

She’s studying at a CC now so she’d be a transfer student either way.

There isn’t much point in applying as a freshman… you can always delay graduation as a transfer and still go through the whole 4 year experience.

Thanks for all your help!

My friend is taking her engineering prerequisites at CC and will transfer those credits to university. Therefore, fiona is correct that she will be a transfer student anyway. Since my friend majored in something completely different in China from what she wants to study in the US now, she wouldn’t be able to transfer to any credits from China anyway.

Her concern with reporting her college history in China is that she would have too many prior colleges to report (college in China, language school and CC in the US). She has a friend at UC Berkeley told her not to report college history in China because her friend knew someone who got rejected because he/she attended college in China (which I don’t understand why).

BUMP for answers. :)

I would just not report the previous college history because it would be too much of a hassle.
