Privacy Control

WTF*!!! Go to this Spokeo and type in your name. If you find ANYTHING with your info on it, go to the “privacy setting” at the bottom and follow the instructions to remove your information.

Emerald, I don’t see the “privacy setting” link. This site has a photo of my house! I’ve never taken a photo of my house. Where do they get this stuff?!

Public records? Property assessment papers? Google maps? My boss freaked out when I showed him a photo of his car parked in front of the company.

Added: they get your phone numbers from phone books. Ours is unlisted, so no phone number is listed next to our address. The photo of the house is from Google for sure. Here is the “remove” page:

http://www.spokeo.com/privacy

Scary stuff that they list names of kids. They say they do not list minors… Ha! NOT true.

Ok-I found the privacy setting link. But we have to PAY to remove our data? Up to $4.95 per month for 2 years? Not only that, if I want to see everything they have on me, I have to join their “club” and pay a monthly fee?

I found it interesting that my husband’s data shows the same address, but the home value is way different than listed under my profile.

I typed my name but I didn’t come up. Others with my name came up but in other states.

soozievt, are you sure? Keep scrolling. I found that states are out of order, and then listed states are listed a second time further down the page.

Hmmm, I guess I’m not very important either as my name doesn’t come up either.

I’m not in there either. They couldn’t even find a single person with my name.

Which isn’t surprising. I looked up my name once and discovered there’s only two people with it in the US (one being me).

Also, I’m only 18 and fully parent-dependent. I have no property records, no credit, no bank accounts. Only my SSN, license, and birth records.

They have my parents in there though, but not very much info…

LOL…they have my mom’s “hobbies” and they’re all wrong… xD

The only picture they have is the google street view one though. Don’t see any others.

Nice to know my house is worth $1Million :D

So much of the information listed is just plain wrong (and funny)!

It declared that I have no children, no AC, and no heat in my house, and that I am not interested in politics and I play sports…all of this is news to me. My husband lives at the same address, though in a different town, and he is single. He has some explaining to do now…

WTF is right! I removed my data and I am more than a bit ticked off that it is out there in cyber world. However, this finally solved the mystery as to why we have been getting junk mail for Tom and Linda of the same last name. They are listed as living at my house! Some of it, like “donates to causes” is a bit too personal. The one I really liked it that it says we are RV people. NOT!

As for the mystery of the house photo. That is from Google Earth.

Emerald - thanks for the heads up.

(I also am without heat and AC)

Kajon, how did you remove your data? When I tried, it took me to a screen where I could have my stuff removed for a monthly fee.

“I also am without heat and AC”

Ditto here. Although my house is worth $1M  Anyone want to buy it? ROFL! Where do they pull this stuff from? Even at the peak of the housing market our Z-value have never reached that mark!

This sounds like a scam to me. I wouldn’t pay anyone for this service.

Lorelei…LOL!

northeastmom…I went through every name…nope I wasn’t there. I tried my husband and two kids and none of us came up. Maybe we don’t exist.

Nrdsb4 - I just clicked on the tiny word privacy at the very bottom. I had to enter the URL, my email and then that mixed up code. Then I got an email and clicked remove. I didn’t get anything about a fee. (though the darn website probably has my credit card # and will just go ahead and charge it)

I was listening to a radio show yesterday about privacy. The guest said some of the info about individuals comes from them googling their names, using google map and gmail. She also mentioned that you have to stop using google for 9 months for your info to disappear.
The guest name was Albright (not sure if it’s the correct spelling).
Another thing if you signed a privacy form at a doctor office, it can be made available to the police or other authorities.

Very odd - my husband and kids are not listed in any state, but I am. According to the website, I am single with no children and love to read, and while my house is worth quite a bit of money, I have no central heating! I think I’ll leave the info there - I’m not going to supply my email address to get the profile taken down.

Hey, my house is worth a million dollars, too. Sweet!

(OP, thanks for the tip!)

Mine too, although it claims it’s a “Middle Class” neighborhood.

I deleted mine (I have an email address that I only use for junk)… most upsetting wasn’t that they google-mapped my house, but that they listed me as several years older than I am. (LOL)
Oh, and one of my daughters has children and owns her house. This will be news to her as well.
