i know this might be an ignorant question, but does Cal Poly view what your doing online if you are using their internet? Like, if i was to download music (not by itunes)… will they be able to track what i’m doing? I know it’s illegal, but i’m just wondering if they track what your doing or view what your viewing on your computer…

^^ Are you talking about something like Limewire? I wouldn’t do it! We told our daughter that she is *not *to put that on her new computer; it’s illegal and against the rules at Cal Poly. So, the answer is: Cal Poly will know if you’re using P2P sharing and you can get into trouble. At least this is what I’ve been reading. It’s not worth it.

In short yes- a network usually records logs of where you go. I don’t believe a person looks at them at cal poly, but they are kept in case of court evidence.
Unless the RIAA or some organization brings legal action upon you, cal poly doesn’t really care if you download media or torrents. The cal poly tech department’s website says they WILL release evidence of your downloads if contacted by these organizations though.

I believe Cisco Clean Access requires you to uninstall torrent/limewire programs. If you don’t, I would be very careful downloading torrents or large files- i wouldn’t be surprised if cal poly notices how much bandwidth you consume and start to question it.
The “ports” common to torrents also may be blocked by the administrator, i’m not sure. This effectively stops torrenting/ copy-right infringement for many users.

The answer is YES–don’t do it. Erase all of those sites from your computer. If you download big files, they will catch you__it is illegal and you sign an agreement not to do so. It will result in disciplinary action. A “free” movie or song is not worth the enormous price you would pay later. I have seen someone suffer the consequences of doing so at a UC school–they are not joking around about this.

Yeah, Resnet is in kahatootz with the folks at the RIAA/MPAA/BSA. I wouldn’t quite go as far as some of the folks in the thread do though. Unless they get a DMCA nastygram from the big media folks or the network slows to a crawl, they typically do not notice. That being said, unencrypted torrents are horridly nerfed. Really annoying for downloading Linux isos. For that we do have the CPLUG SAN, which is over at http://mirrors.csc.calpoly.edu . Which, like all CSC stuff is currently down as of this writing.

Hum… This strikes me as senior project fodder in one way or another…
