Hello everyone
So this year my gpa was deflated due to medical and family problems. I guess I’m one of those unlucky ones now huh? I got a 3.85W gpa my sophomore year (3.5UW) which I believe will severely impact my application. This is low compared to freshman year which was a 4.0875W and a 3.95UW. However, my sophomore year gpa is low because of Honors Spanish (I came into this district from another that had a weak Spanish curriculum so I tried honors this year and it was pretty bad) and Honors History. My unweighted is low because of a B in AP Chem but in my school it’s pretty good to get a B in that class especially as a sophomore… I’m not too sure if Spanish and history will affect me that much because it has nothing to do with my major
So problem number 1: my gpa is low
Next, I had a schedule conflict for my junior year (next year) and I am only able to take 2 AP classes because of this. AP calc bc accelerated and AP macroecon. The rest of my schedule includes: honors british literature (second hardest English class in the school. AP lang and lit is combined into 1 AP English class just for seniors), honors us history 2, cp Spanish 4 (cp because of the problem with my other district), gym, cad 2, honors biology. I could take biology over the summer to take AP biology but the course is really expensive and I had a really bad experience with them before. I am worried that colleges will think that my schedule is weak for my most important high school year. However, my senior year I can take the following: multivariable calc, ap physics c, ap english, supa (dual enrollment) Spanish, gym, honors engineering, and ap computer science. However, ap biology is unfortunately cut out. My guidance counselor said taking out cad and engineering to free up my schedule will be negative towards MIT because they will see that I didn’t take advantage of a great engineering program.
So problem number 2: my schedule is potentially weak and ap biology will get cut out if I don’t take a summer course
Despite these facts I have these things that I can also put on my application:
President and founder of the chess club and team- founded in my sophomore year. probably one of my biggest accomplishments because I made chess cool at a public school (or maybe that’s just in my head).
FTC robotics club- member since freshman year. possible position next year
Local math team- JV (freshman) Varsity (sophomore-present)
science league- freshman year (didn’t do it sophomore year because I missed tryouts to go to the doctor)
Academic Team- sophomore to present
Math Club- freshman to present and possible position next year
Columbia SHP- starting my junior year. just got accepted
AMC 10 school winner
I think I can qualify for usamo next year and get a decent score.
My uscf chess rating is 1600. Pretty standard but I think I can be a master by senior year
My college goals are Harvard, MIT, Columbia, Yale, and Princeton
Can you please help me work out my two problems? I am highly certain that my gpa wont fall again because my personal issues are resolved.
