Programs still accepting applicants?

Hi,
I’m a current senior hoping to major in MT. Originally I was only auditioning for VP but decided over the summer I really wanted to chase my dream and audition for MT. I’m really not a great dancer, but I’m a strong actress and singer.
I did end up auditioning for classical voice programs as well and one songwriting program (that one is my top choice but it is an extremely competitive program that I can’t put all my eggs in one basket).
My prescreens haven’t been going well, and I really don’t want a gap year. Does anyone know of programs still accepting applications?
Other issue: I ran out of spots on Common App…so really need schools that use Coalition or have their own application!
I’m going to list the schools I’ve applied to (leaving out my VP and songwriting programs: just MT and acting) and my current prescreen results:
Prescreen Yeses:

  • SUNY Fredonia
  • University of Miami (problem with my application, not able to actually audition for the MT program)
    Prescreen Nos:
  • Emerson
  • Rider
  • UNC Greensboro
  • Carnegie Mellon
    Awaiting Prescreen Decision:
  • CU Boulder
  • CCM
  • Elon
  • UMich
  • NYU
  • USC (only applied for acting)
  • Syracuse
  • New World School of the Arts
  • Nazareth
    Doesn’t Have Prescreen:
  • American
  • BW (already auditioned, I get my decision on December 11)
  • Binghamton (no audition: safety)
  • SUNY Geneseo
  • MMC
  • UTampa
  • Tulane (no audition: academic reach)
  • Wagner

Is there a list of what schools will be at Unifieds?

there will be closer to the date. In general you cant audition at walk ins to places that have rejected your prescreens but there should be others.
Also did you try U hart? and what about Purchase? i thought purchase has an mt program but not sure

Purchase only has BFA Acting. I applied as an academic safety just to Playwriting during free SUNY week and was accepted.

Hartt is a very difficult admit but it looks like they are still taking applications. If I remember from years past there will be some weird ones at Unifieds. You can look at their instagram and it should have the list for last year.
How are your academics? Could you apply to Northwestern?

My academics are:

  • SAT 1320 (720 English 600 Math)
  • 6 APs
  • GPA: 4.11 w/4.4
Academically I have some pretty strong ECs and extracurriculars: Published author (novels and Newsday articles), Drama Club president, lots of clubs and honor societies (including National) etc. All State and All Eastern singer

Probably worth an applicaiton for Northwestern if it is in your price range and interest. The academics for promising MT students can be a tiny bit lower (would go test optional) and you can submit an MT supplement. Where did you apply for vocal performance? Their deadline for Bienen was last week but you should consider places where you can do both.

James Madison University in VA is still accepting applications. The regular decision application deadline is January 15.

You could audition for both the BA Musical Theatre major in the School of Theatre and Dance and the BM Music Theatre emphasis in the School of Music.

Plymouth State University in NH and Christopher Newport in VA are also still accepting applications.

I believe VCU and George Mason in VA are as well.

I think most programs that do not require a prescreen (and maybe some who do) will still be accepting applications.

I believe there is a unified virtual walk-in audition through Acceptd. Which could allow you to do walk-in auditions without having to travel.

In terms of NY Unifieds… there are member schools that are in NY auditioning at that time, as well as non-member schools. Each school manages their own scheduling and walk-in policy. So, you could check on school websites to see if they will be there and if they are still accepting applications/ if they accept walk-ins.

I forgot to mention UNCSA. although they are a conservatory and acting program they do hav excellent MT training also. May be worth a look.

NU doesn’t have an MT major-- theater, performance, and dance majors can apply to be accepted into their MT Certificate program in fall following their first year. So, you’d need to apply to the School of Communications as one of the above majors OR to Bienen as a voice major to be considered for the MT certificate, which is in addition to the degree you’re already pursuing.

Right, but you can apply with a MT supplement that can help with admissions.

Very true about the optional supplement, which is encouraged if you’re interested in auditioning for the MT certificate. But you still have to audition and you get no indication by submitting the supplement if you might get accepted to the MT certificate program.

Perhaps the supplement helps with overall NU admissions though? That could be the case. S has a friend in the VP program who is very interested in the MT cert program- haven’t heard yet if he’s been accepted but he did just have a lead role in a student run musical. So there are MT opportunities all over NU if that’s of interest, even without being in the MT program.

Yes, that is why I suggested it. I do think that there is a boost for sending in the MT supplement, and since OP is a strong student if NU is within other requirements it is a reasonable choice.

One more suggestion, Muhlenberg for an excellent MT program that is an academic safety and not audition based.

CUNY City College has a non-audition BA Theater major with an optional MT concentration. Yes, it’s a “commuter school”, but it does have dorms, and theater majors tend to be a tight knit crowd who stay around campus. This would make a very economical safety. Also CUNY Queens theater program, although this one may require an audition, not sure

This post might have some options that you could consider:

My daughter is at LIU post and loves the training. I think they do rolling admissions and they typically take larger class sizes than some of the other schools you’ve mentioned.
