What schools have programs that offer theatre classes for college credit during the summer? Do these programs qualify for federal financial aid?

I’m not sure I understand your question, maybe you can give us some more information.

Many, many, possibly most, colleges and universties in the US have classes over the summer. And these are almost always the same classes that are offered the rest of the year. Usually there is a smaller selection of classes available, sometimes the class is a little more “intense” because they cram the whole thing into a smaller amount of time. but on your college transcript it looks exactly the same as if you had taken the class during the year. So they are worth credits just like normal, and you can use whatever funding you have to pay for it just like normal.

Are you talking about something else?

KEVP

Or maybe you mean pre-college theatre programs where you end up with college credit. For example, completion of Boston University’s summer theatre program results in 4 college credits, but ONLY at BU and only if you get into their BFA programs (not BA programs). They give you a letter, and you can ask for official transcripts to be sent to other colleges, but you would have to petition other colleges to accept those credits.

I am looking for college where I can take some theatre classes my college doesn’t offer such as stage combat, business and acting, intensives on certian topics. Also, I’m majoring in musical theatre but I want to take more acting than my program offers. I’m hoping to use financial aid to pay for them and transfer them into my program as electives. Does anyone have any recommendations?

You may want to post questions about the financial aid piece on the financial aid forum. You can use financial aid for summer programs, but I do not believe the yearly federal loan and grant amounts do not change, nor does the total for which you are eligible. You also should talk with the financial aid office at your school about this. If a school has an articulation agreement with another school or program you may be able to retain school offered grants when studying at an external program for a semester.

Costumequeen, I’m not in the position to suggest anything but tomorrow I’m leaving to do the National Theater Institute fall intensive and it might just be what you’re looking for. They offer courses during the summer as well, take a look:
[O Neill Center :: National Theater Institute](http://www.theoneill.org/national-theater-institute)

And the summer courses:

Okay, I understand what you are saying now, costumequeen.

What you want to do is take some classes at one college, then transfer the credits over to another college.

Have I got this right?

What season you do this in isn’t going to make any difference. Summer-Fall-Winter-Spring. Transferring credits is just transferring credits.

I’ve certainly done this in my life. I started one place, transferred my credits to a second place, then transferred everything again to a third place.

The decision about whether to allow you to transfer your credits is going to be made by the college you are transferring the credits TO. So you may want to go to that college beforehand and say “I am planning on taking these courses at this college. Will I be able to transfer the credits here?”

Of course, there is also a part of me that says “If there is another college that offers the classes you want, why don’t you just transfer to THAT college?”

Yes, like the O’Neil program. Does anyone know of any other programs. Thanks so much for the help.
