PR started last week! With all the fashion threads here we MUST have a CC following of the show, right?!
Just finished watching the intro show - the show that introduced the contestants - very intrigued!
About to watch the first actual episode - but thought I’d start this thread to get your first impressions…I need to work on some of the names yet…liking a few of the foreign contestants.
Yes, count me in. I felt the first 2 on chopping block were bound to go. Could add another 4 to the list who don’t have a chance, I’m rooting for the heavy set woman…
Won’t say more, as I don’t want to spoil it for others.
You took the words out of my mouth, @patsmom. What surprised me in the first episode is how annoyed Tim Gunn seemed with the contestants. He’s usually so classy & controlled!
Yeah, I thought that someone must have told Tim “now go in there and be bi_chy!!!” haha!
I was sorry to see Duncan go right off the bat. I had a feeling that the Chinese woman was going to NOT produce something good.
That woman - Merline? OMG, how annoying - TAKE OFF YOUR HAT!!!
Some real interesting people. I have plenty of curiousity.
Oh and regarding spoilers…IMO, once the show has aired on the east coast it is fair game to start talking about - if you didn’t watch it or in another time zone - just don’t post till the next morning! If we can’t talk about the show after it’s done, we’ll never get a good discussion going.
So happy that you posted this! It is my all time favorite show, and I didn’t know it had started. I’ll be watching online so I’ll be at least a week behind. Can’t wait!
I’m watching!! I love me some Project Runway It’s fun to see what they come up with to torture them each week. The only thing I don’t like are the group challenges.
I’m watching, too! I would never have known the new season was starting had I not somehow seen it in an email from Sally Beauty, as I was deleting it, which was advertising their involvement. (Seriously, I have suddenly begun to receive tons of email from Sally and I haven’t shopped there in years.) Merline was super annoying, but I noticed she seemed kind to the other contestants and I liked her design. They will probably keep her around for a while. Little Asian lady needs to go next. That outfit was hideous in every aspect: color, fabric, fit, design.
I was surprised that the judges like the black dress with the color on the “train” by the guy who has tried out since season one. I really didn’t think it was top choice material.
I was surprised they liked that black dress too–it looked like something I’d seen a zillion times before–and that was 20 years ago.
What I found more shocking was that all the other contestants loved the salmon toga and totally thought it would win, and then it was panned and he was booted off. What does that say about the other contestants that they were so off the judges’ page?
That salmon toga surprised me too, even Tim Gunn had a positive reaction to it. I didn’t think it was a winner, but it was pretty enough to make it through.
I think the salmon dress showed promise during the making process, but admit when it walked the runway…it was just a lump of poofed fabric. I was curious about the guy who made it though and would have liked to see him another week to see if he could turn out something better. He did say that design was new to him. And he was quite frank on the runway. I like when they TALK on the runway and don’t just smile, nod and agree with everything the judges say - however, I don’t care for when they TALK BACK to the judges - ok to defend your design to a point but if all the judges hate it, you are just sinking your ship sooner by running your mouth!
Kind of hate to admit it, but I’m a fan as well! I didn’t like the first cut though - IMO the salmon dress clearly beat the ill-fitting boxy outfit. I think the decision was partly made because he couldn’t not define what his point of view was while she had a clear voice to offer even if that one outfit was a fail. In a rare occurrence, Tim Gunn missed the boat on his advice though (at least what we saw) as he seemed encouraging of the salmon toga.
I’m a fan too. I’m not surprised that Tim got frustrated especially when that one designer’s comment was “I’m not use to doing things in one day.” Tim was funny “have you seen the show”.
I often wonder how much time there is between getting picked and when filming starts. I would spend every waking hour practicing on different fabrics, trying my favorite techniques with different materials, making sure I was familiar with different sewing machines, and practicing on garments I usually don’t make. I hate when designers say things like “I don’t know how to use a serger, I don’t make ball gowns, I can’t tailor pants” and so on. They’re in season 14 now - now excuse not to know what is coming.
I’m a fan and my husband, so we get to watch together and comment all the way through.
Sometimes the judges pick to keep a designer that they think they want to see more of - that has design potential. As a just graduated student, the designer just didn’t stand out. Boxy outift not good, but there seemed to be design potential.
Lots of contestants said they’re not very likeable -so that should be interesting. But at least no one declared “I’m not here to make friends”
I do wonder after watching the first show how many designers they get submitting collections and then how many they end up interviewing to pick their 16 finalists.
My favorite is Tim Gunn, but my husband’s favorite is Heidi (how could it not be)
I started watching part way through Season 3; sort of stumbled across the show and got hooked because I know how to sew and have made many articles of clothing for myself. But I’ve never made a pattern from scratch or draped fabric, etc. About half the time, I think “That is some god-awful UGLY looking fabric!” and that’s usually what Tim and the judges love. But yes, Tim Gunn is all that and a bag of chips … or maybe a bag of buttons …
