Please can someone give me an estimate index cutoff for Texas? I think I just missed it by screwing up in one section
@LoveTheBard Why does it have to be so high?
This sucks…if we had taken the old PSAT, it would’ve been a lot easier to know if we qualified or not…and the 99th percentile thing doesn’t help cause it seems like everyone is in the 99th percentile lol.
@PAMom21 So does that fact help kids who scored well on verbal or math? I’m kind of confused with all the numbers :p.
Is it just me or was the new PSAT format a lot easier?? because that would mean that that many people would get higher scores which messes up lots of things ugghh
@JuicyMango, it would help the kid who does better on verbal, as that now counts as 2/3 instead of 1/2.
@JuicyMango - It’s so high because there are so many bright and/or high achieving and/or affluent kids, and because, according to USNWR rankings, CA high schools are ranked second nationally (Maryland is first).
How nice would it be if cutoffs were based off of national results rather than by state :((
I believe that @PAMom21 is correct.
@JuicyMango it helps the kids who do better on the verbal sections. If I’m correct, National Merit status is determined by the Selection Index, which is derived from adding the Reading score (1/3), the Writing/Language score (1/3), and the Math score (1/3).
@PAMom21 Oh man…that means I’m done for :/. I got a 750 in math but only a 710 in verbal…99th percentile for all of them but I got a 217 index which is probably because of the verbal part that I completely screwed up -_-.
Reading and writing counted as 2/3 before too. That is not new. The SI has always been made up of reading plus writing plus math. That is one thing that has NOT changed.
Is an index of 211 within anyone’s nm predictions for Texas?
Yes, but the percentiles given in your reports today are based on the newer half/half split, and therefore not super predictive for NMS rankings in those very top percentiles. A kid with a lower math score will end up with a higher overall percentile for the selection index (I think).
The one thing I am certain of is that I have two score results, and the higher 1520 score (with a corresponding higher percentile) has a lower SI score than the other result.
@JuicyMango what are the percentiles for each of your subscores- there are three. Use the “user” sub scores not the national.
Kids, stop asking about your scores. Figure it out.
- Look up the college board’s concordance table for old and new PSAT. https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/pdf/psat-nmsqt-preliminary-concordance-tables-2015.pdf
- Find each of your 3 subscores and determine what the old equivalent was.
- Add up the old equivalent to get an idea where your score would fall on the old scale.
- Compare this to old NMSF qualifying scores for your state.
No guarantees–even before they changed the test it wasn’t clear exactly how the numbers would work out each year. But you probably won’t get better info until this fall, and certainly not from prepscholar.
@PAMom21 there are percentiles all over this report. Percentiles for the combined scores and then two! Percentiles for each subscore.
I am talking about the subscore percentiles.
Are there percentiles for the actual SI score? That’s the one that counts. That’s the one where you can say things like “Oh, PA typically needs something a bit above the 99th”, and make educated guesses with.
Wow, those PrepScholar cut-offs seem very low. Do we think those are even close to accurate? And I realize we will not see actual cut-off scores until Sept 2016, but I will be shocked if those low cut-offs hold up (though I would also be extremely happy!).
deleted for my sanity.
@gettingschooled It says 99th percentile for all three user sub-scores. I’m worried because in CA I don’t think just 99th percentile will cut it…
No- there are two percentiles for each sub score. One is a national percentile and one for a user defined group- based on people who actually take the test- that is a better one in my opinion.
I think if someone is in the 99th percentile in each of those percentiles, they’ll easily be in the 99th percentile for the SI. That would be okay for commended but won’t help anyone draw any conclusions for semi finalist.
