I’ve started another thread in which I ask people to share their scores and percentiles so we can see where the breaks are. The College Board will release this eventually, but in the meantime, I think looking at the percentile level of your state’s past cutoff scores is the best indicator of what your state’s 2016 cutoff might be. Rough, yes, but a good tool nevertheless.
Still no scores here in NJ.
Many states (including PA) are typically over the 99th percentile.
@JuicyMango Remember, I was saying that was good for Commended. I am not going to even venture a guess on semi finalist this year!
@am7311 I believe if you got 1460 total score then you will make the cutoff for TX. Don’t ask me to explain how I arrived at this conclusion. The cutoff for TX was 220.
@PAMom21 Commended does not vary by state. I am talking about commended.
What is commended?
Like what’s the difference
The conversion by section from this test to the old test just seems really off…I can easily get a 230+ on that test yet it gives me a 215 conversion??? I got a 2250 on the actual test…so there’s no way I’d score that low.
If they still post state summaries in February (maybe later this year, ugh!), that will help with the speculations. Also, the commended cut traditionally comes out in early April, which adds another critical data point. And that one is based on national percentiles (typically unknown prior to its release), which helps. So yes, you all have to wait until early September, but there are minor updates along the way. My son’s year, I was pretty sure he was in once they released that commended cut.
@mathyone Your calculation is correct, assuming the past cutoff score stays the same. There is no reason why it should not stay the same though, so your calculation is right on point IMO.

@songmino, there is a national score for commended students. I am not sure what the percentile is for that, but it is the same across the country. Lat year the commended cutoff was about 201 if I remember correctly. At and above that score, you are in the group waiting to see what the state-specific cutoff score is to see if you move onto NMSF. below the commended score, you are done, no special accolades.
Ah yeah @gettingschooled, I see what you are saying. I missed that you were talking about commended there. I have lots of data for past years, that unfortunately isn’t worth so much this year, but in the past…commended fell pretty close to the 96th/97th, but most states needed at least 98th, if not 99th (or higher) for SF. In the past we could roughly add so many points though once the commended cut came out to estimate our respective states. Lots of us my son’s year were running linear regression equations on the data (and you thought this board was crazy, LOL!)
Asking for a friend:
1470, 221 SI, chances at semifinalist?
I got a 1410 and a 208 selection index…
@appgodxoxo, it totally depends on the state your friend lives in. Great for Mississippi. Maybe not as great for Massachusetts or California.
@mtrosemom
This would be in CA. A 221/228 isn’t enough for semifinalist?
Guys…220+ SI is basically guaranteed so please stop asking.
National percentile ( including non-testers) and PSAT (testers only) percentile are provided for each individual.
What is not available is NMSI percentile (including non-test takers?) which will determine the state cut off. I think one has to wait to know more about it. In a way it is smart of CB to provide all the sub scores (a la carte) and let institutions build their own burritos/indexes.
@PAMom21 My older S missed SF by one point this year when all the CC linear regression said he would make it. Oh well, water under the bridge now. Trying to follow the poor class of 2017 to get up speed for next year.
