**PSAT Discussion Thread 2015**

@rosalindsmom haha thats cute

@rosalindsmom convinced me to switch to the SAT. Great website.

Well, we FINALLY got the scores for my DS. Do we think a 221 will be safe in NY?

Can someone point me toward a pdf or screenshots of the test questions? My son’s score report didn’t include the questions for some reason.

yes

No I believe that the cut-off in N.Y wil be 222.

@lmjdad1 – Why do you think NY cut off will go up so much to 222?

For IL, I got the following from my daughters school (My daughter has 218 (1470) on 228 scale). Her school counselor gave me the averages, in her school they had 10 children scoring 218 exactly and 12 children scoring 219 to 228 and 33 children scoring 215 or higher. All these are Juniors only numbers from my daughter’s school.

Based on the above, I feel Illinois might go with 219 cut-off this year but there is still a hope as following is the actual data of my daughter’s school of past NMSF numbers from 2011 graduating class to 2016 graduating class:

2011 - 22
2012 - 12
2013 - 23
2014 - 13
2015 - 23
2016 - 17

So, if my daughter who has 218 has to make then her School will have 22 NMSF’s for 2017 graduating class. (Statistics on her side from the above Table) has her school in alternate years have crossed 20’s as they had 17 in 2016. Will 2017 have 22 from her School then she would be in based on the above actual data till 2016?

But what concerns me is 10 children from her School only scoring 218 exactly, so state wide how many children are in the same boat? This concern puts a negative opinion on my part that IL might be 219 cutoff this year on 228 scale! Keeping my fingers crossed!

@WGSK88…what have the cutoffs been in the past years for your state?

@Tgirlfriend in 2016 it was 215 on 240 scale!

@WGSK88 …that would be a huge increase on a lesser scale. I guess it could happen however I wouldn’t think so. A lot of people are saying they think it will go down or stay the same as last year. Who knows at this point.

here is another thread to watch

Made a slight mistake, it’s 12 children scoring 218 exactly and 10 children scoring 219 to 228. Another good thing to look at his my daughter school since 2011 never had less than 12 children qualified for NMSF. Another way to look at it’s hoping IL cutoff will be 218. Otherwise, her school will do the worst in 2017 graduating where only 10 children will qualify if 219 or higher is the cutoff for 2017 graduating class. Only my hope is slightly higher but can’t be said until or so more comparison from other good schools including Aurora Math & Science Institute which fields in the large number of NMSF each year in Illinois as it’s one of the elitist school in IL.

@MammaLlama Under the 240 scale, NY cutoff was 219. I’d think 221 would be fine under a 228 scale but based on some of the percentile data out there, it is hard to tell what is going on.

@dallaspiano do you play piano

yes, mme

@WGSK88 As a fellow Illinoisan, that’s super helpful information! My DS has the same exact PSAT score as your DD, so it might be a nail biter for both of us. We have a parent meeting with our GC on Wednesday and I’m hoping she will give us a breakdown of scores for the juniors at his school. They have traditionally had between 45-63 NMSF per year over the past several years. I’ll keep you posted on what I learn!

@DOTexe Hopefully your DS high-end School will give us the answer (still only will be close approximation!). Luckily in my case I didn’t have to meet and got it done by email communication with my daughter’s school! Please keep me posted. If they don’t have more than 50 that are 218 or higher then IL cut off might be 218!

@DOTexe – please also post what you learn here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-act-tests-test-preparation/1849640-national-merit-cutoff-predictions-class-of-2017.html

This is our NMSF cut off prediction thread. If others get any info from GC’s or other sourses about scores & percentiles , please share it too.

@CA1543 will do! (If the GC is so willing to share and actually has the score breakdowns, that is).

@DOTexe – Many thanks in advance for whatever info you are able to get and share.
