We live in Northern Virginia. We have a son who is a junior in a private school. He has close to a 4.0, but just scored 64 writing 53 math 59 reading on his PSATs. He is not a star athlete, but does volunteer work and is a great creative writer. What would his chances be getting into UVA or William & Mary?

The PSAT often cannot accurately predict one’s SAT performance; some people do better, other people do worse. My advice would be to study for his SATs in spring, definitely take a practice test or two so that he is prepared. If he has a good SAT score then he’d be an excellent candidate at both schools, even more so if he can use that creative writing to produce some stellar essays. Good luck!

3) To answer your question, it is too difficult to predict his chances at the two schools with the information you have given. As littlebuilder mentioned, PSAT scores don’t always accurately predict SAT scores. I scored ~185 when I took the PSAT with no preparation. After a little preparation, I scored over 2300 on the SAT. Your son should aim for the middle 50% of SAT scores for these schools. In addition, he should try to take two SAT subject tests in areas where he excels. Beyond grades, transcript, and test scores (the first two are the most important), he should continue to build good relationships with teachers who will write recommendations for him. He should write thoughtful, personal essays when it comes time to apply. And he should excel in the extracurricular activities that interest him. And above all, remember that college acceptance is not a barometer of self-worth.

Good luck :)

Proud father- I agree. Time to study some. My D started low, like that, with a 4.0 UW and with a class and some effort is over 2000 now. Does it mean she will get in? Nothing guarantees that but I think her chances rose substantially. That said, better the high GPA/ low SAT than the reverse I think. We are in NoVa to. If you want to PM me I can tell you some prep places we like.
