PSU Class of 2020 Decision Thread

@japsmom can you share some of the discussion that lead to your decision to not be reconsidered for fall?

@Thewaitng4ever my son just really wants to make sure he gets into the finance/or accounting major and was not sure how definite it was going the DUS route. When we visited Penn State this summer an admissions counselor for Smeal told us that it was much harder getting into a smeal major going the DUS route. I’m learning a lot from CC and am hearing otherwise. We just signed up for the smeal accepted student day and will definitely find out the answer to the question of dus or smeal. I wish a student who actually went the dus to smeal route would post to let us know if it was difficult.

@japsmom We are dealing with the same situation - going to psu DUS vs another university w the actual major of aerospace. From everything I have heard and seen on CC there is no downside to DUS at PSU. For some reason I’m thinking there has to be an advantage of being accepted to a specific major and I’m afraid of not finding that out until later

@Thewaiting4ever I think Penn State makes things a little confusing. Can you go to an accepted student day for DuS and find out the answers to your questions? It seems like there are a lot more DUS acceptance days than Smeal. I feel like you, why can he go fall for DUS and not Smeal but only summer for Smeal if they were the same thing.

@japsmom Good suggestion thanks. We are waiting to hear back from a few other schools and then we will be better able to make a decision. At least this process opened our minds to other options.

My son applied to IST department and received an email with his acceptance letter to summer session before it is posted on his psu account, is that odd that he received an email before the psu account is updated?

Accepted to PSU 2020 Smeal College of Business, Summer 2016 though…

@aspada1027 I didn’t think that PSU sent out any emails. At least we didn’t get one. Found out he was accepted via the portal on Jan 21 but still have not received anything in the mail.

I don’t know why but he emailed them about when he would get a decision and they sent him his acceptance letter over email

does anyone know how long after you get accepted will PSU send out the acceptance packet?

@tmperini My daughter found out on a Tuesday (released at midnight) got her acceptance packet two or three days later.

You should receive it in about a week…maybe a little less.

I was denied admission to Smeal for the fall, but I emailed admissions and I am currently being reconsidered for DUS and summer session. What are my chances?

@japsmom @Thewaitng4ever My D (who is a soph at PSU) is enrolled in DUS; she was undecided between engineering and business so DUS enabled her to take the pre reqs that met both majors while she figured things out. She decided on Supply Chain in Smeal and is declaring her major this Spring. She had to meet the entrance to major required classes for Smeal and the GPA required by Supply Chain (3.2) in order to get in. When a student is accepted into Smeal as a freshman, they are considered a pre-major and must still meet the entrance to major requirements and GPA of the specific major in Smeal they declare during Spring of Sophomore year. Check out the Advising Portal on the PSU website for Smeal. (I copied the info below directly from the Portal):

“Smeal College of Business
Students entering Penn State SU15, FA15, SP16
Entrance to College
It is not possible for a student to move into the Smeal College of Business in premajor status.
Entrance to Major (ETM) Requirements
These majors are under administrative enrollment controls. To enter, students must:
complete the entrance requirements below
be enrolled in the Smeal College of Business (pre-major status) or in the Division of Undergraduate Studies
apply to enter the major when they are within the 44–59 cumulative credit window”

I would recommend speaking to an advisor in DUS as we have found them to be very helpful. My S was just accepted to Summer DUS. His intention is to enroll in Smeal however he is unsure of what major. We plan to enroll him in the Summer LEAP program and feel that the summer session will be a good transition for him into Fall. Having said all this, I understand that you need to make the right decision for your child. Hope this information helped. Best of Luck!

@japsmom There is no difference in requirements for Smeal students vs DUS students. Finance requires a 3.5 GPA just to declare your major and accounting is 3.2 I believe. The only advantage that I am aware of is that the Smeal kids get access to the Smeal advisors instead of the DUS advisors. If you have a 3.5 GPA when it’s time to declare your major, you are guaranteed a spot in the Finance program, no matter if you are in DUS or Smeal.

My daughter checked on her portal on Thursday, Jan 21. I suspect that her acceptance came earlier than that, she just wasn’t checking her portal! The letter you can download from the portal was dated Jan. 19. Yesterday, she received the acceptance packet in the mail. We are in blizzard country, so possibly that packet could have arrived sooner, like Sat. I think the portal info and the packets get sent out simultaneously, not too much lag time in between.

DUS majors can speak to a Smeal Advisor if they have specific questions. DUS advisors have a broad knowledge of the university’s majors since students in DUS can transfer to any major (except Nursing and some of the Arts) once the entrance to major requirements have been met. If you are accepted to Smeal as a freshman (as a pre-major) it is assumed that your advising would be related to the Smeal majors. A DUS advisor has to be prepared to advise a student on All of the majors at PSU to help the student narrow it down. You are asked at the beginning to provide 2-3 areas of initial interest so that your gen ed’s can be steered in a direction.

@tmperini You should have your acceptance packet via US Mail within 3/4 days. My S portal was updated on Monday and he got his packet by Thursday.

Has anyone who applied to Smeal by the Dec 30th deadline (after Nov 30th) heard back yet?
