PSU Class of 2020 Decision Thread

@heyitsme11 I am sure others can give a better answer about job recruitment. I did read that PSU has the largest alumni network and that their job fair is the largest east of the Mississippi.

Guys does computer science have 2 years common with engineering??

@burbs20 - my daughter and I went to the accepted students day this past weekend. While we really enjoyed it, we hadn’t had a full tour of the campus yet so, for us, it was worth it. Had we done so already, I would have passed on it because it’s really just half an hour of “welcome to PSU” and then the tour for an hour or so. By lunch time, it was over. We spent several more hours on campus because my daughter arranged to meet a potential room-mate. We will go back for a session in March where the specific major is discussed and we are looking forward to more in-depth conversations about academic planning, etc.

Would have done Summer but not another campus

We did the PSU tour in November, but we’re still going back for the accepted students day session, specific to the Engineering School, on Monday. My daughter is still undecided and will use this as sort of a refresher. Plus she’s bringing along a classmate of hers that was accepted to PSU as well, but never got a chance to tour it. And we’ll be taking in the PSU - Ohio St. Women’s Basketball game on Sunday, so we’re making a mini-vacation out of it.

Make sure to bring your parka --it’s bitterly, bitterly cold here with a nasty wind! Today’s high is supposed to be 4!

what are the options for getting into UP?

You can ask to switch to DUS and/or summer session. Summer session for freshmen sarts June 26.

What is DUS?

Reporting on Admitted Students Day today. DH and DD attended. It was about 6F at UP today! Brrrr.

Just to give you context, none of us had ever been to Penn State before. First I heard about PSU is a few days before D applied, as in “help me with this form please” so it wasn’t on my radar or included in the research I had done on schools.

Forgive my errors below, typing as DH is speaking and trying to make good sentences out of it.

Today began with a general assembly at the Student Union. Registration tables, give your name, checked against the system, pamphlets, t-shirts, lunch vouchers distributed, lanyard with nametags which were color coded by college. Approx 300 admitted students and their families. An hour long briefing including welcome speech by admissions dean. Talked about general trivia about the school (how many clubs, 645,000 active alumni), introduced panel composed of director of housing, campus security, admissions, food services, who each spoke briefly. Opened Q&A, which was helpful and informative.

Campus tour followed, kids broken down by colleges: today they had liberal arts, engineering, DUS, and information systems. Your specific tour emphasized buildings/locations important to your college. Also included residences, library, common buildings to all, gym, but not the stadium (too cold to walk that far.)

Lunch at the Hub, but you sat with your college mates. My D made a new friend already, so that was nice.

This next part is unique to the college-specific Admitted students day, as opposed to the generic Admitted Students Day. You went to a meeting room or auditorium with your collegemates, in our case, Liberal Arts. They got to meet the dean, assistant deans and department heads of the various academic disciplines of the college. There was an AV presentation, an interactive game. The format was interactive and presented like a FAQ. It was quite informative, accdg to DH. D was able to speak to the head of the Psych dep, her intended major, and ask specific questions, and got great answers, on a one-on-one basis. Topics of general discussion with the larger group were internships, study abroad, relevance of your education (what are you going to do with it?), the significance of alumni in internships, job placement, financing study abroad programs.

Acdg to DH and D, they learned a lot, liked what they saw and heard. DH was quite struck about how clean and orderly the campus was. He thinks the students exhibited a true love and pride for their school, something he did not see in other schools he has Visited. Throughout the day, he heard the battle cry “we are” and the reply “Penn State”.
And now we know Nittany is a mountain, not just the Lion, and the first mascot was…a mule.

And they got to taste the famous ice cream of the Creamery (being renovated but the ice cream was available at the Cafeteria.

DH highly recommends attending this day, especially if you have not visited before. Recommend you try to attend a college specific event (which I think are scheduled on weekdays) rather than the general Admitted Students Day (which I think are on weekends, and are mostly marked FULL by now.)

Almost forgot to say: there were booths/tables set up by Admissions, where you could ask questions, and you could also accept your admissions offer on the spot!

So it was very worth it to attend for my family, in spite of the late night 5hr drive last night, and the longer drive back tonight in frigid temps! The day started at 915am through 430pm.

Hope this is helpful to you. Goodnight.

Hi @TwinMama1998 - Congratulations to your D and thanks for the information!! My daughter has an audition at Penn State next weekend and we will be spending two days on campus.

Did your DD sit in on any classes? Did they have separate things for parents, or did your DH & DD stay together the whole time?

Thank you!!

(just want to interject – discussion of this stuff probably needs a new thread? and as trivia : tour guides are expected to respond to “We Are” or get in trouble – so the other students yell it to passing tours as a sort of friendly harassment. I wouldn’t take it as a gauge of spirit. )

i have been admitted to PSU UP and i am planning to play soccer…
i have a few questions:
is the soccer team already selected while selecting the freshmen??
do freshmen and seniors have different teams??
how can i get into the team ??
are there any selections??
please reply to this

@224kimbo D did not sit in on classes. I believe there are separate days for that. Yesterday, DH and D stayed together the whole time. And, you are welcome!

@heyitsme - I don’t think there are walk-on tryouts for the soccer teams. Pretty sure everyone is recruited well before arriving (Women’s Team is finishing up recruiting for the HS class of 2018). Not 100% sure about the Men’s team, but strongly suspect they are similar (with a slightly later timeline). It is very unlikely that you will be able to find a spot at this point - most of these teams are stocked with youth National Team players and HS All Americans.

There are no Junior Varsity or Freshman teams.

There are active club teams that are very good. Tryouts for those teams are in the fall. They travel and play other college club teams.

@TwinMama1998 You said there were T-Shirts/lanyards…were they free? I know tha the accepted students sessions are mainly for thos who have not enrolled yet. I have already enrolled at PSU and they are hosting an accepted students information session near where I live. If they give away free PSU paraphernalia, then I might as well go

@Techtheatrewiz yes, the tees and lanyards were free

How soon did you get the email with how to register for housing after the deposit was paid?

@kimba3842 I got an email within 24 hours…

That being said, there were no specific instructions on how to apply for housing. So, you must go to the eliving page on your own. There will be a new accepted students handbook under your MyPennState portal on the right hand side of the page. The handbook will have a lot of information on housing.
