PSU Class of 2020 Decision Thread

@ian123 yes, you can live with someone from a different pride. All people in that pride will take the same classes, but roommates do not have to be in the same pride. My daughter and her summer roommate were in different prides, BUT, to live together in summer you either both have to be doing leap, or both not doing leap. This is because they use specific dorms for leap. Not everyone who goes in summer joins leap.

What is LEAP??

Is it available for fall students

Summer program only shows one meal option for us. Anyone else? Son got into his first pride choice for Leap.

We just went to accepted students day yesterday and they did mention that there is only one meal plan available for summer.

@heyitsme11 The LEAP program is available for summer students only but if you were accepted for fall you can switch to summer if you’re interested in the program. There is a good description of LEAP on the website under info for accepted students,

Hey guys! Look! A whole thread that’s already pinned, and it’s all about LEAP!

@asaberian Not a a stupid question at all. I had the same question for my S. I called PSU and they provided me this link to the University Bulletin that spoke toward Gen Ed Requirements - This should answer your question - http://bulletins.psu.edu/undergrad/generaleducation/generalEd5

for those who requested to be reconsidered for DUS, how long till you received your decision?

We asked to be reconsidered for DUS UP Summer on 1/22. Just found out today that my S was denied. So its an acceptance for Altoona Computer Engineering at this point. He got into Univ of Delaware so not a clear decision any longer.

@mmsharp sorry to hear that. Good luck with your decision

If Udel is affordable, that’s what I’d pick. It’s solid for engineering, nice college town, overall a better experience than Altoona.

Anyone woth Computer engineering in UP for fall???

Applied 12/30 to UP Business (finance) Fall but found out today got into Altoona; same intended major…those who have researched the campuses well - any thoughts on trying DUS at UP as being worth it? does the career center and/or recruiters give preference when interviews are done in senior year (looks like some higher level courses at smeal are restricted for DUS students)…

You’re only allowed to be in DUS for two years anyway. So by the time you were ready for "higher level courses " at smeal, you would be a smeal student, provided you completed the core requirements and achieved the required gpa.

There is no advantage to being “in Smeal” at UP rather than DUS. You aren’t actually in a major until junior year and everyone, DUS or Smeal, have to complete the same entry to major requirements.
Depending on your stats, however, being reconsidered for UP is not a slam dunk. They don’t always allow reconsideration. @benkenobi

@jlhpsu i am an international student and I am accepted to UP for CE.
So is there any scholarship after 1st sem for international students??
How can I join the honors group and what’s the difference between normal and honors ??

Leap is an outstanding program. I would like to clarify that Summer Admiited students do not necessarily have lower admissions requirements from those of Fall Admiited students. Three years ago my daughter CHOSE summer over fall. She graduated receiving numerous scholarships from various colleges including Penn State for academic performance. Her roommate was a local resident with equally outstanding statistics. Today they are lifelong friends and their circle of friends came from the summer Leap Program. The Leap program provided outstanding opportunities to not just meet people, know how to navigate the campus, but also develop authentic professional relationships with professors. Professors who teach Leap classes take an interest in their students because it is not a ratio of 1:100 or more. The grade foundation is also a great plus. Today those that she roomed with or shared pride classes are reaching their goals and successfully achieved (or surpassed) the requirements for their colleges that ranged between minimum GPAs of 3.2 to 3.4. Many have even chosen to travel abroad throughout the world in this their junior year.

My second daughter CHOSE summer Leap program after witnessing the great success her sister experienced. Although we strongly suggested she apply to other schools this is her choice school and program start. By the way she has already received acceptances and some scholarship opportunities from other institutions. The Penn State connection cannot be easily paralleled. It is an incredible institution. We are so proud and honored that she will start in the summer.

By the way neither my husband nor I attended Penn State yet we are so thankful that our children will be a part of this institution.

@heyitsme11 I am sorry, I am not sure of scholarship information - other than to say, PSU generally gives out very little. Schreyers honors college can be applied for after freshman year but it is highly competitive. There are only about 300 honors college students.

Clarification on my comment regarding specific Penn State scholarship money: scholarships for Penn State specifically were from outside organizations. Other colleges (private institutions) in addition to outside sources offered scholarships as well thereby making the tuition costs equal for an in-state student. Penn State for us was the best choice educationally, financially and for further professional aspects for our daughter. My apologies for misleading in my writing it was unintentional.
