Has anyone received a scholarship besides me for PSU? Also should I accept the scholarship or wait to see if I get a better offer?

How much is said scholarship for? Thats likely the only free money you’ll get from the school, with maybe a $1000 grant/endowed scholarship thrown in, but don’t expect too much more. PSU is notorious for lackluster financial aid.

Well they have given me a $12,000 scholarship renewable up to four years but was wondering do they usually give a lot of these scholarships? I also hope the financial aid packet is decent because i really need it.

When were you accepted and when did you hear about the scholarship? Did you hear about it online or in the mail?

I was accepted around the third week of november and received my scholarship letter in the mail a couple days ago.

gary, did the scholarship have a name?

@gary92321: Can u also post your stats? As you say, you are the only one that seems to have gotten a scholarship from PSU so far. Are you sure this scholarship is not something special (did you have to apply for it separately)?

@luciethelakie it was a academic excellence award based on my grades and activities.
@woods1234 my stats weren’t that great so I’m actually shocked i even got a scholarship.ACCEPTED- Eberly College of SciencesStats:

Thanks for sharing that info, gary, and congrats to you! That’s an OUTSTANDING award from PSU. I’ve only ever heard of Academic Excellence Scholarships being awarded to Schreyer students.

Maybe they’re awarding them to scholar-athletes too!

Good luck to everyone that applied to Schreyer Honors College hope all you guys get in and get scholarships. Btw @luciethelakie yes I was aware usually Schreyer Scholars receive scholarships and am quite shocked myself because my SAT scores were low so I really did not expect to receive any money. One thing I would want to redo is take the SAT over again but my mindset was that these scores really do not reflect on my thinking ability lol and it was a bit of foolish on my part. However I did make one of my top schools and wish everyone luck on their applications.

not the same thing. only the name is the same. SHC scholarships are funded through a restricted endowment to be used only for the purpose.
This would be similar to last years provost award or something they give to athletes of non-revenue generating sports.

OP’s award is twice the size of the Provost Award from last year, though, isn’t it? (Or maybe the Provost Award was higher last year for OOS students? I can’t recall.)

I posted in the FA thread asking about the fate of the Provost Award, but no one has responded. I guess PSU isn’t going that route this year, especially with applications up by 20%.

@luciethelakie I just received a letter from PSU stating that I have been also awarded the Provost Award. Do you know what it is and can I use it for the Schuylkill campus?

gary, as far as I know, the Provost Award was established about a year ago. I believe they were typically for $6,000 a year for two or four years, and the criteria for dispensing them was a huge mystery to most families. There was some question as to whether or not it would be offered again this year. Yours is the first I’ve heard of one for the Class of 2018. Congratulations!

Which campus were you admitted to? I would imagine they’re going to want you to use it there. Since you’re being recruited for soccer, you might want to contact the coach and ask him if he recommended you for the award and if you need to attend his campus.

Here’s the official statement from Penn State announcing the awards:
[Penn State announces new scholarship awards | Penn State University](<a href=“Page Not Found | Penn State.”>Penn State announces new scholarship awards | Penn State University)

Here’s the thread discussing it at length last year in the Financial Aid forum:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1430588-penn-state-provosts-award.html

You might try posting your question there or starting a new thread. The folks who post there are extremely knowledgeable and very helpful.

I call BS.

Very fishy that he is the only one that we’ve heard of with this offer.

Also, any recruited soccer players committed long ago.

@dreadpirit clearly you have never been recruited by PSU and frankly don’t know anything. I have until January 15th to notify the coach of the soccer team if I am interested in playing and just because I have received a scholarship you have no right to say I’m lying when you clearly don’t even know me and probably don’t know much about PSU either.

Admittedly, I am more familiar with the girls side (PSU finished the class of 2015 in the fall and are now working on 2016 commits), however, on the guys side the majority of 2014 d1 commitments are done (at least 80% of the top 100 recruits were committed and announced before the fall). I do see that only one guys 2014 has been announced for PSU but I’m sure the actual number of commitments are much higher.

I also know that PSU is VERY stingy with merit based aid and your stats really don’t match the expected profile of any recent historical merit aid recipient. That, coupled with the fact that not a single person on CC has made any mention of financial aid or scholarships being awarded yet, I think it is fair to conclude that you are making things up for entertainment.

@dreadpirit why would I make up things for entertainment. I have in my hand a hard copy letter dated December 17th stating scholarships I have received signed by Madlyn L. Hanes, the Vice President for Commonwealth Campuses and called undergraduate admissions to confirm that I truly did get these scholarships and that they was no mistake.

“Why would I make things up for entertainment?”

Have you ever been on the internet? At least 10% of forum posts are trolls.

@dreadpirit all I am saying is what would lying do for me. I am not trying to spread any false rumors, just sharing information that I have received from Penn State and trying to help anyone else with their application process.
P.S. Happy holidays to everyone
