D accepted Altoona for Smeal (not UP)…called today and had her switched to DUS and she was admitted to UP immediately over the phone (for the fall). I had no idea it would be that fast.
SAT 580CR, 590M, 600W, ACT 25
GPA 3.7uw, 3.9w
8 APs
Lots of EC, but nothing too crazy
Thank you for the information jlhpsu. I’m sure she would not want to miss out on a “normal” freshman dorm experience. The supplemental housing option sounds terrible and I greatly appreciate the update.

Son has been Accepted, Fall, UP, Eberly
He was not a shoo-in by any means and was right in the middle of the “grey/yellow band” of the bubble chart based only on 9-11th grade GPA and SAT I’s. It could have gone either way.
3.47 GPA thru 11th grade; (3.87 GPA for 10-12 grades; big upward trend and h.s. g.c. sent in first qtr senior grades, but they were not considered, and I think if they had been he maybe would have heard a lot sooner);
12 AP/HNs; 3 sustained leadership positions; 3 varsity letters; many ECs; 2 paid internships; math d.e.; decent SATs for math+, CR; horrid for writing section; (SAT II’s all 720+, but PSU says they don’t consider); submitted all the essays they asked for; submitted counselor rec and teacher rec.
On application, said YES to Summer and second choice Behrend
Applied around 10/20/14. It looks like he and/or school started sending in stuff around 10/4/14
Status changed from “reviewing credentials” to "coming days" on Monday, 1/26/15 evening between 4:30-6pm
Decision posted around 7:20-7:30 PM the next day 1/27/15. (You can see, he was one of the last to get his decision in the first round).
Letter/Envelope arrived at home Monday, 2/2/15 (D.C area).
Was originally accepted to Smeal at Harrisburg, requested re-evaluation, and was just ACCEPTED TO DUS UP SUMMER. I am more than excited and I would like to thank @jlhpsu for the advice earlier in this thread!
ACT 27
GPA: 88.9/100
No APs or Honors until senior year (crazy, I know)

I was just wondering…Is Penn State a really big party school and does it become difficult for students to concentrate on studies? Just asking because I am not much into parties and I got accepted into Penn State UP. And is there any kind of peer pressure on students who dont like to drink because I have heard some people saying that.
Responses appreciated.
It’s not like people are knocking at your door forcing you to go and party. You actually have to go looking for it. I understand your concern about the peer pressure to party, but this is under your control. Change friends or make sure they understand your concerns. Believe me you will not be the only one in this situation. Plenty of students do not drink or party.
You may want to pick another dorm than East. My son says it’s noisy and some of the kids are heavy partiers since it’s their real first taste of Freedom.
Pollack is quieter and a mix of freshmen and upperclassmen.
@reddevil10 I believe you can request an alcohol free dorm floor. There are several clubs you can get involved with to meet people that have the same interests. Go on the Facebook page for class of 2019 and find a roommate that doesn’t party. Penn State is an awesome school but it is big. You have to seek what you want to get out of it or you will get lost in the shuffle. THON is a great activity to get involved with.
(this is a decision thread – dorm convos should technically go elsewhere
All Penn State dorms except Eastview Terrace are alcohol free, at least according to the stated rules. Enforcement relies mainly on the RAs and judicial affairs. fyi.
