Published Musical Theatre Canon?

I am planning on auditioning to NYU’s Tisch. They just updated their artistic review requirements, one being a 32 bar cut of a Published Musical Theatre Canon. Now, I was wondering what the meant. Does it have to classic? Can it be more on the contemporary side? Or does it need to be a certain genre.

I already have a few pieces in mind and wanted to know if they fit in this category.

Basically, what does the term ‘published musical theatre canon’ mean?

I think it just means that your cut should be from a published, standard work of musical theatre. “Canon” in this sense is " a sanctioned or accepted group or body of related works, e.g. ‘the canon of great literature.’ "

This is the Theater/Drama Majors forum. College Confidential also has a Musical Theater forum where you might like to post further queries. In fact, there is a subforum for NYU/Tisch that is part of the MT forum.
