Purdue Early Action for Fall 2024 Admission

I don’t know of any Purdue staff on CC so hopefully you or your student can send a quick email to the business school.

Isn’t this exactly the reason you pay one of the lowest tuition rates for a top school among the nation? At Ivy’s you will get all of these perks provided that you get in and would like to pay 90K.

Agree that they are cost conscious but it’s free to talk up the school. And the Deans can make appearances. They can also start later than 7:45 am and allow people time to get breakfast. As for food, rice costs the same as pasta, this is just an awareness decision. We weren’t looking for swag.

If I had to guess, that statement is more about IU Kelley school than anything else. There would have been a lot of in-state kids at that session who were also admitted to IU, which has the better-known business school.

@PepperMilo Sorry you didn’t have an ideal experience. When my son and I visited in late Feb for that Purdue’s For Me event, we did not encounter that at all. Speakers were vibrant and very spirited from the early morning general sessions, through to the engineering-specific events, and the Honors college presentation the next day. We left campus feeling super welcomed by all and really enthused about the university. I don’t think many public universities really provide refreshment for anyone. At least not in my experience. I visited Binghamton with my daughter in spring 2022 and I don’t recall anything provided for breakfast, and we purchased our own lunch in the food halls in the afternoon.

The most exciting ASD we went to - stadium, with marching band playing, food and bev - was a public uni actually. It was a safety, and how much effort they put into wooing families raised them in our minds.

In the end, we’re not going to pick a 4 year program on whether they had coffee for us in the morning. However, we are looking at a roughly 200k expenditure and as a consumer I have to believe them when they communicate their product. I can find no good excuse for the Deans to not get up and speak. Purdue has large lecture halls that can accommodate the ASD invitees, and they should be using them - run some videos from the President, play some music whatever. Market your product. A.J from the Business School Admissions, said to the group that they know the first half of the day is horrible, but we were now with Daniels, and they would take over from there. That helped. But come on, if you know it’s horrible, change it. I can’t imagine that the professors at Purdue would allow that quality from their students. This isn’t a grade that’s getting curved

Super insightful. Thanks for that!

For us, the U of Minnesota (TC) ASD a few weeks ago was a revelation - stadium style seating in the auditorium, alumni talks, personalized welcome kits, recorded welcome message from the President, marching band etc. They were clearly selling the univ and it really helped in raising the profile in our minds. The Purdue ASD on Monday was the second one for us after the one last year for S23, so we were well aware of what to expect. After the Purdue ASD, my son remarked “It’s almost like Purdue feels it doesn’t need to market itself” which may be true for Engg but perhaps not otherwise.

It’s so interesting to me to hear these comments. Our Purdue engineeering visits were one of the best of the 15 schools we toured but that was 6 years ago now.

S24 still committed to Purdue! He was really focused on meeting students and the academic advisor / administrator in his Engg department at Purdue to address his concerns. Once he was done with those conversations, he was sure Purdue is the college for him.

We have had three visits to Purdue in the past 18 months and all of them have been great. Enthusiastic guides. Great presentations. Lots of student engagement with us. Our visits have concentrated on Engineering and Honors though. I cannot speak to other schools on campus.

We had a similar experience and were very underwelmed by Purdue and Daniels School of Business. We walked away with the impression that their business school is second fiddle to anything engineering. My daughter got direct entry into IU Kelley and UIUC Gies, both of which had programs that absolutely blew us away. Purdue needs to up their game in a huge way if they plan on competing with these top-tier, Midwest business programs.

Same positive engineering/honors college experience for us in February, we were impressed and felt very welcomed! Maybe it was the business school angle? We hate early mornings too but so much was packed in we understood.

It stinks to be underwhelmed after traveling. It sounds like you’re describing Stewart, which is full of 1980s finishes. I think small schools trot out the president and deans because there aren’t as many of these welcome events. President Mung’s week included an NCAA Elite Eight win in Detroit and announcing a new semiconductor partner company coming to West Lafayette. There is a downside to a decade plus of frozen tuition and a swag- and snack-free presentation is probably a reflection of that. If your student is uncomfortable with the choice now, decline the offer and move on. But I’d hope your student does more talking with current students to answer questions. It’s college, not a prison sentence. you can leave if you end up not liking it and transfer to another school. Sorry it wasn’t all you were looking forward to.

Thank you for your kind words. There are still many things we liked about the school – the size, the safe and secluded campus, the ease of changing majors. I love how organized the websites and data are and have consistently had the impression that the school was well organized. The reputation and the impressive internships and ex-missions of course are a draw.

We have a couple more weeks to decide.

Purdue doesn’t yield protect.

Is anyone attending the 4/8 campus tours? It’s going to be an exciting time to be on campus. Hopefully, this causes an uptick. I know my S24 is excited about the visit and what is happening at the campus.

Why? Purdue will likely (knocking on wood) be playing for a college national basketball championship that evening. He has read about the excitement within the student population, which will likely be next level. Beyond that, the weather looks like it will be great—70 degrees and no rain. A solar eclipse will be in full effect.

To put this in context, playing for a national championship, the storms are parting and the sun/moon/earth are all aligning for a 4/8 visit. Fun times.

For the FYE crowd:

1:45 – 4:30 P.M. Solar Eclipse Watch Party on Stadium Mall (aka Engineering Fountain)
We’ll have 1,000 free pairs of eclipse glasses available to help attendees safely view the spectacular show. Join us in sharing this unique experience.

Eclipse Times:

3:06 P.M. Full Begins

Does anyone know if it’s possible to apply for a third choice of engineering if neither your first nor alternate choices are available at regional campuses?

Following the main campus, which regional campus is considered the best?

UMN needs to sell itself more. I just had a daughter graduate from UMN in May of 2023 and I didn’t even let my DS24 apply there. That place is riddled with crime from locals living near campus. Our daughter had her car stolen from secure underground parking at her apartment and was harassed on the light rail until she decided just to stop riding it.

Purdue’s campus felt very safe to me, FWIW.

I hope nobody gets caught up in the travel nightmare that they’re projecting in the Indianapolis area for the eclipse! Many schools and businesses have closed for the day because of the massive influx of visitors expected to clog the roads. Purdue is a little north of totality, but the interstate in that area could be affected, so if you are traveling, look into some of the back roads! It should be an exciting and memorable experience for a college visit, though!
