Purdue Early Action for Fall 2024 Admission

Do you remember if honors college was a seperate part of the application?

@momofboiler1 do you know the deferral acceptance rate? Does the deferral acceptance rate vary by major?

There were two essays (500 words each). You could select you were interested in applying for honors on the common app and fill out the essays there.

My OOS DS was deferred. We are actually happy with his deferral–as someone else just said–down, but not out. He only indicated a first major when he applied (CS) and is now thinking about changing majors. Can he ask to be considered for another major in his LOCI? He is planning to call admissions officer next week, but I wanted to see if anyone here has experience and advice for this. Purdue is very high on his list (1st or 2nd) and so far, he has only received deferrals from other schools.

There is a form to add or change majors on the portal.

I’m sorry I don’t know, but I would suspect that it does vary by major. I don’t recall seeing those stats broken out.

Last cycle was the first year that they deferred so many applicants. Prior years it was almost always accept or reject.

It’s under application tab, then change requests. Good luck

Here’s where I put in the plug for filling out the LOCI, based on what we personally learned from filling it out and talking to the Admissions department.

This is where you tell Purdue how much you truly want to attend and why. Describe specifics about what Purdue offers that make you want to attend. Not their rankings, but things like specific research opportunities/facilities (ex Zucrow for AAE), extra curriculars (ex PSP, AAMB, Purdue SAE…), or things about the community or location. If Purdue is your #1 school, say it strongly and tell them how you think you’ll contribute to the campus community.

Likewise, consider if you have an additional very strong letter of recommendation from someone that you can attach. We included an additional letter with the LOCI from someone outside our son’s high school, to provide more emphasis on personality and community contributions.

I do think the LOCI’s matter, especially for high stat students applying to the most competitive majors

No. I think in the past about 1/3 of honors college applicants got into that program, but only about 15% of all accepted students get any kind of scholarships or aid. I would caution parents about getting their hopes up, especially if you are from out-of-state and in a popular major (CS, engineering, professional flight, etc.). We got our financial statement about three weeks after she was offered admission and she didn’t get a dime of assistance, though she had amazing qualifications. Still, Purdue is a bargain, even at full price, in part due to the tuition freeze. The popular majors tend not to send any gifts either (tee shirts, water bottles) - another way of keeping costs down.

You can definitely ask to be considered for another major. If you want Purdue don’t be afraid to be clear it’s your first choice and will attend if accepted (if that’s true of course). Be sure to have a strong case for any alternate choice–don’t just ask for the sake of asking. Deferred means your first choice is still in play.

OOS Daughter accepted in FYE and got the Lilly Scholar program scholarship. We are so shocked and excited.

Sounds like my S22 - almost exact same GPA and SAT, also deferred at MIT, ended up enrolling at Minnesota for engineering. Good luck wherever your daughter ends up!

Actually we do not see an option to change majors under the Application tab–>Change Requests. Only options for Change Requests are: Cancel Application, Change Academic Term, Update Parent Information, or Update Student Information. Maybe it was an option before but now that he is deferred, it is no longer an option?

Edited to Add:
Purdue FAQs state: Once your application is submitted, you are unable to change your major until you receive an admission decision. At that time, you will have the opportunity to request to be considered for a new major. Once that form is available to you, it will appear under the Change Requests page.

Perhaps that form is not yet available to him, but will be soon.

Is merit notification in the acceptance letter?

is there anyway to ask for Major Change?
