Reading through this thread, I am amazed at the quality of kiddos that have been accepted and deferred.

For some additional stats and details for the record. My son was deferred as well. DS24, OOS/CA, 3.94 UW/4.45W, solid accompanying stats, and ECs tied to engineering. Applied FYE for CompE or Materials. Looks to be a standard deferral letter encouraging the submittal of upgraded grades and test scores as well as complete the LOCI. I was surprised at DS24’s acceptance and readiness, frankly eagerness, to submit his S1 grades and the LOCI. He quickly pointed out that a Deferral was not a ā€œNoā€ā€¦made me wonder if he was following this thread.

@My_4boysnme, good luck to your son. Strong stats and with his brother being at Purdue, a compelling additional driver. 100% get the reason why he is tied to Purdue. It must be a good sign that the deferral letter had the automatic consideration for Spring 2024??? My DS’s did not.

I am a bit of an LT lurker, so thanks to @Bookishmom , @Groundwork2022 , and others who have added a bit of direction and sanity to the next steps.

4 year JV, Varsity sports
No leadership or other outstanding ECs

Made a campus visit last year (not sure if that matters) and loved it.
Good LORs, no idea about essay (she wrote it herself and we didn’t get to see, assuming she wrote some aspects of the campus visit in the essay)
No scholarship.

Does anyone know if you can put down a housing deposit without accepting? I see that the acceptance deposit is $500. If you put down a deposit it looks like Purdue will not refund the deposit if you change your mind.

I’m curious about letters of deferment. I’ve seen some state that their letter suggested you consider other campuses, one person said their letter said they would be automatically considered for spring 2025 enrollment. Ours has neither of those things in it. Anyone else?

I believe you have to accept your admission offer first. You have until mid April to get priority housing though so no need to decide now.

Ours does not list either of those options either. However, my son specifically indicated he only wanted to be considered for the West Lafayette campus as he does not want an urban campus and wanted to be close to Zucrow labs

My second son was deferred last year for FYE OOS with higher stats than his FYE Boilermaker brother that applied the year before. He submitted a LOCI and letter of recommendation and was eventually accepted RD. Don’t give up hope. There were a lot of deferrals and waitlists at schools all across the country last year. More so than the year before.

Thanks for your info! How did your son submit the letter of recommendation? He attached a file in the portal with LOCI or the recommender sent to Purdue directly?

part of that deposit is considered a housing deposit. you will lose the $500 if you withdraw but can’t be guaranteed Purdue Housing if you don’t deposit before April 15th. They know that doesn’t correspond to the May 1 commit date that is used overall.

From what’s been shared people offered other campuses such as Purdue Ft. Wayne or Purdue Northwest are declined from main campus outright. Indianapolis is considered main but this is the first year that is the case now that IUPUI has split into IU and Purdue operated separate entities. Students were asked to indicate if they wanted to be considered for Indianapolis when they applied. Earlier Purdue said it was not assigning people Indy unless the student wanted to be considered for Indy, so if people are getting offered Indy without asking for it that would be a change in their stated policy. I’m inclined to assume students said consider me for both Indy and WLaf because both are ā€œmainā€ and aren’t excited to get Indy.

My son’s notice of deferral stated that they don’t recommend submitting another letter of recommendation. Is that a standard thing they said for all deferrals this year? Or was it for some reason specifically said to my son? Kind of curious if that was specific to my son, does that mean the letters he already submitted were really good or really bad…lol.

I think its standard because even I had it

If I remember correctly, the portal had an option to submit the LOCI and another recommendation letter that provided additional information. My son also included his senior year first semester grades.

Top 10% of top public HS /selective entry

Heavy engineering experience including graduate level aeroapace internship at different university, college level engineering coursework.

Tons of EC including peer tutoring, engineering camp counselor, multiple sports, club leaderahip. Excellent essays including heavily researchd Why Purdue essay.

I’m not even sure he will turn in a LOCI or just take one of the presidential scholarships from another school. Purdue and GT were top 2 choices,in that order.

Definitely not aimed at your son. Looks to be standard. My sons was the same with a note that they do not recommend taking any new tests or getting any new letters of rec.

The deferral letter does emphasize, through bolding, that new grades or test scores be submitted as quickly as possible.

Good luck all!

i picked WL as my first choice for both my majors and indicated interest in Indianapolis (cus why not). I assumed my first choice would be prioritized over Indianapolis, so I’m hoping they didn’t keep me in Indianapolis just cus i clicked ā€œyesā€

I probably just got rejected from WL and put into Indianapolis, but I don’t know cus they were never clear about it in the letter

Fly to Chicago or Indy then drive. Flights to chicago typically cheaper
