The biggest pro is that it gets you into a good dorm with AC. Purdue housing has been tight and last year there were freshmen who had RAs as roommates! My son was hesitant to do a learning community but it turned out great.
Honors college Dorm is super nice - take asvantage of that if you applied/were accepted to HC

Son was accepted for his second choice major, Game Development and Design. His first choice was CS, although he seems more excited about game development!
My son is in the exact same situation. Heās very excited about game development, as he intends to pursue it as a career. Iām curious, will your son be attending Purdue, or is he still waiting for other decisions? At the moment, weāre leaning towards Purdue, but I wonāt lie ā if a better opportunity arises, weāre prepared to consider it.
Hi ,
When you say FYE Aerospace, could you please clarify if the admission letter states Aerospace or is is just FYE (but you applied for Aerospace under Engineering during application)
@momofboiler1 Thank you for the inputs and guidance you have been sharing based on your experience with Purdue for the last several years. I personally really appreciate your patience in answering questions from people like me who are trying to navigate and understand Purdue admissions process. I am sure there are several others in this forum who feel the same.
S24, OOS got accepted to Daniels school of business. He is interested in Economics BS major. Purdue is currently his top choice amongst the admits he has received. There are a couple of more colleges where he has applied under EA and decisions are expected by end of January.
The College of Agriculture which houses the Landscape Architecture major just announced a new Spring Start program (Spring Start expands opportunities for Purdue University agriculture students). My son who got deferred for Biological Engg in the same college is also automatically being considered for this. The press release is short on details, but personally this looks interesting to us as it could mean two shots on goal (Fall '24 admittance with decision by 31st Mar and Spring '25 admittance with decision in Feb). Purdue is his top pick. We are also submitting LOCI and 1st Sem grades soon. Good luck!
I highly recommend joining some of the FB groups - Purdue Parent and Family Connections, Purdue Townie Moms, and then the official Parent of the Class of page.
The Townie Moms are the best! They are a group of volunteer local moms and have everything from a list of dermatologists, who to call for car trouble, where to stay and eat, etc⦠They post all kinds of helpful things from holiday hours to commencement tips to road closures. And the year my D was a freshman, a volunteer mom drove an OOS student to/fro Indy for medical treatments! They also do fundraisers throughout the year and will delivery goodies to your Boiler. If you join one FB Purdue group, the Townie Moms page is my vote.
Freshman year is tough but possible. My d was hired by her coop company January of freshman year. If she had opted to do a five term coop, she would have started that first summer but she wanted to go abroad. She ended up being hired by Purdue engineering for when she returned from Italy, and did an internship on campus the remainder of that summer.
I highlighly recommend that all students avail themselves of the resources at the Career Center. Go early, polish the resume, practice the elevator pitch, and go to every career fair to at least practice. The first big career fair, IR, is in mid to late September so very soon after arriving on campus. Pack interview clothes and be ready to hit the ground running!
Thanks a lot for this information. Absolutely agree. I had one more question given engineering focus of Purdue is it right school for management consulting career profile
Interesting, I donāt recall that line about letter of recommendation being there last year. And in our conversation with Admissions, they thought it was a good idea for us to attach one, since it was from someone outside the school. Mid-year grades and new test scores wouldnāt be submitted using an attachment, theyād just get sent in directly through the database systems (we were able to see in Common App last year when the school had provided the mid-year grade updates).
Internships are pretty rare for first year STEM students, but they do happen. I donāt think I would count on it, though. If you join the Data Mine you will work with a company on a project, which is good resume building for later, however. The honors college advisors will help those interested students out with leads, but even then thereās no guarantee. My daughter has an internship lined up this summer as a current CS sophomore, though.
Anyone else have doubts about Purdue giving FULL consideration for first choice major at WL? Kid was given second choice in Indy for a major not offered in WL.
Thanks @co_runner. I am definitely making assumptions that the deferral letters follow a consistent format (most are the same), but possibly they are a bit more tailored around perceived weaknesses in a studentās admissions application. Not certainā¦it is possible they are changing practices as the volume of applications increases.
I will say: I am somewhat impressed with how my son (and others) are handling this. Between the maturity of absorbing the deferral to his #1, eagerness to get back at it āto tell his storyāā¦there has been growth. He is a YOUNG senior who has taken ownership of his application process to colleges/universities, and to watch him handle it (good and bad) the way he has is great.
For a point of reference, this is the text in his deferral letter. Hopefully it will provide some context to others:
