Purdue Early Action for Fall 2024 Admission

Madge,

I find the whole acceptance thing fascinating. We are on the last of 4 and had a valedictorian, a #3, and 2 salutatorians. My kids were all musically inclined and quite accomplished in achievements for music/band and did lots of volunteer work through the church. In addition they tutored and each had a few clubs in which they were active. Each one had a “disappointment” when it came to acceptances and it always took us by surprise because we weren’t aiming for the schools with super low acceptance rates. In the end, the first 3 found schools that were great fits and also affordable. We are on our last and hope the same holds true.

If this is his top choice, I would continue to show interest. I have seen several high stat people with deferrals from Purdue.

I want to send in a LOR with my LOCI however currently I only have it in scoir. Is there a way to send it without asking for the file to attach with the LOCI?

This is true but does not mean do not try. My son (AAE major) now a junior wanted to travel the summer after freshman year and did. But he made a lot of connections and had a lot of email and LinkedIn contacts from the the IR.

There are also other opportunities to talk to Businesses and recruiters through out the year. Seek them out, leave a resume and follow up on those opportunities. They have a more personal feel than IR according to my son.

Bottom line it is great experience and put you ahead of those who just wait.

My DS got an internship last summer and one secured for next summer already due to these contacts.

Not yet, but you can make one on here if you want.

My understanding is that LORs should be sent directly and not attached to the LOCI.

Yeah, I just dont know how I do that if its on scoir. Do I ask my school counselor to send it directly?

Yes. The school counselor can send it by directly.

He’s still waiting for another dozen schools in the coming months so not decided by any means. He also got accepted to Santa Clara for CS with scholarship which makes the cost about the same, so we’re leaning more towards having him stay local with better job prospects in Silicon Valley.

Accepted - No merit scholarship.

I’m guessing that professional flight applicants don’t get many merit scholarships - why should Purdue offer inducements when only 10% are accepted?

Securing a spot in Santa Clara’s CS program and receiving a scholarship is a testament to his abilities, which is incredibly impressive. With the added advantage of being in Silicon Valley for networking and job prospects, it sounds like a smart choice. Best of luck with the other decisions! No matter what, he’s poised to end up at a university that’s a perfect fit for him!

did he have 2nd major on the application?
My kid who has similar stats as yours was not deferred. They rather gave her 2nd major. She wanted Aero.

Wow thank you so much for everyone’s help in navigating through this process!!! Our DS has taken the reigns throughout this process, and we are just looking to support him as best as we can without being overbearing, and educating ourselves has been one way to help us guide him through this.

A couple of questions that I may have missed being asked/answered:

What does the deferral mean for his second choice? Do they only make a decision on the second choice if he’s rejected for his first, or would they offer you your second choice and state that your first is deferred?

I’ve read that folks have recommended the end of the month as a target for responding to your deferral if you are still interested, but what if 1st semester grades aren’t finalized until 2/9? Can he submit his LOCI by the end of January and make a note that 1st semester grades will be later submitted on 2/9, or should he wait and send both on 2/9?

Thank you again for everyone’s help getting through this!!!

As Purdue is one of our top picks, we were planning to submit the LOCI quickly and then update the portal with Sem 1 grades when they become available (1st week of Feb). Any thoughts?

in response to your questions: deferral means first choice is still “live” so if they subsequently decide to not admit for 1st choice, your student is looked at again for 2nd choice. it’s multiple bites at the apple so to speak. Your student was in the EA mix and is now in the RD mix. The positive is that they like what they’ve seen and still want you in the pool of candidates for 1st choice.

if an offer comes back for 2nd choice, you have been declined on the 1st choice even if the letter avoids saying “you’ve been declined on your first choice.”

There’s nothing magic about doing the LOCI by the end of the month. i was cautioning against banging out an emotion-fuelled letter this weekend. Take a little time to make it great. Being deferred is Purdue asking you for some help in getting them to a decision.

Historically March 31st has been the latest decisions have come out. Releases historically have come throughout the winter. it has not been the same as a single date a la Jan 15th for EA.

That’s what they expect. Good luck!!! Rooting for everyone to move the needle to yes!

Everything I’ve read and heard about suggests management consulting is a yes but investment banking is a tougher try coming from Purdue. Big4 recruits at Purdue.
