The school does not arrange your internship. There are several opportunities to meet with organizations interested in Boilermakers but they aren’t a given hire, they are competitive. Opportunities arise through affinities (honors college, professional orgs, etc.) and can appear to fall into some kids’ laps, but you don’t get assigned an opportunity, you earn/win it with some effort. (or your parent knows someone and voila, summer job in your field. if i could’ve done that for my kid, i know i would have)
For freshmen, networking among smaller hometown businesses can be the best path to a summer job that 1st summer. Or doing on-campus research (sometimes for pay). Or take classes or work at an ice cream stand to make some money. There are plenty of alumni who never had an internship who get a job after graduation. Go into searching knowing most aren’t looking to hire freshmen and be open to less than household name companies and you’ll be fine.
The majority of consulting and investment banking hires come from MBA programs not undergrad, so I wouldn’t necessarily make this a priority in choosing a college.
That was our experience last year. Almost zero activity in February (based on online forums), but there seemed to be waves approximately each Friday in March (our son heard either on the 10th or 17th, can’t remember precisely)
Starting with this year’s class, students admitted to the Indy campus are direct admit to major: Students applying to engineering at Purdue University in Indianapolis, an extension of Purdue University West Lafayette, are directly admitted to their major .
@momofboiler1@Bookishmom Thanks for the quick response.
one more quick question
Our first choice was West Lafayette but got into Indy just becuase we said YES for the confirmation they asked later.
Does this mean we are rejected at WL? any insights on the Indy Engineering program?
The Indy program is brand new so there isn’t a lot of information available yet. The university is marketing the program as a true Purdue degree and program, with more ability for internships and industry partnerships.
Yes, you gave two choices, they gave you acceptance to Indy so your student is not accepted at WLaf. This fall is the first for the Indy campus no longer being IUPUI and being Purdue. The courses/requirements mirror the plans of study for engineering already in place at WL according to Purdue. But this is a new thing.
You cannot ask to be reconsidered for the first major, but you can request a change to something else:
"Prior to May 1, 2024
Students can request an application major change through an Admissions form found in their Purdue application portal under the “Application” tab, then select “Change Requests” from the dropdown. Students requesting a change in major will be reevaluated for a decision for the new requested major. Doing this request does not forfeit the admission for their current major if denied for the requested major. If your student has any questions about this process, they should contact the Office of Admissions - admissions@purdue.edu"
All the negatives in your question have me confused. There’s the honors college buildings that are honors housing. this year Winifred Parker Hall across the street is also honors only housing. Incoming honors students who reply by April 15th have priority and are more likely to get that housing. Don’t know if waiting until May creates a possibility of not getting into honors housing. Last year there were some students who were in an LLC where they were in a different building than the bulk of the LLC. Housing is oversubscribed. Purdue has already abandoned its policy that was implemented this year of having freshmen-only dorms. They also did away with letting returning students keep their current dorm room. If you have questions call Purdue Housing to get clarification.
