Curious question here… Anyone here accepted to FYE without AP classes/credits? My son (declined admission) goes to an independent school that does not offer AP classes. While he’s taken several years of calculus, chemistry and physics (supposedly at or above AP level) he did not sit for any AP tests. I’m wondering if that was a detriment to him.
Your son should not have been disadvantaged if AP courses aren’t offered at his school. The high school profile goes with the transcript so the admissions folks would be aware of what classes were taken/offered.
My D’s roommate freshman year went to a school with no AP classes, and she was not only accepted, but in honors college as well.
I got into FYE…without any AP/IB scores.
Same here - got FYE and have no AP classes but have taken advanced classes (advanced topics), which are supposedly at the AP level.
I am worried about the exact same thing! It’s hard not to view schools differently when one is all sunny- people outside etc. b/c you go visit it in the spring and then seeing a school when it is cold and slushy and everyone is hiding inside.
In the past, if we visited a campus in the spring/summer, we tried to visit again in the winter. But if that was not possible I would pick winter. I think it is better to see it “at its worst”.
It’s true, we are in Boston so I feel like he is good with snow, but worried he would “love” another school only because he got to see it when it was green and shiny. But it is what it is!
Does anyone know if/when an acceptance packet arrives?
My wife and I visited UIUC and Purdue the end of January 2023 with our DS24, and he had other warmer weather schools on his list. I asked him about visiting those instead and wait, but similar to what Intercoastal posted, my son said if he didn’t like it in January, it’s better to know that while visiting and before attending…
Good luck and safe travels!!!
I told my son it is much easy to study when the weather is cold and crummy. When it’s beautiful I want to be outside having fun.
What acceptance packet? It is all in your portal. Last year some (not all, not even most) departments sent swag, but overall, they eliminate that to keep tuition down. Your kids gets plenty of free stuff once enrolled and on campus.
They have sent out an envelope with a letter and a letter-sized sign that says “[your name] is a Boilermaker” and some stickers. It took a couple months to arrive.
Silly question that I need to ask her admissions counselor but I thought we applied to the Honor’s College but apparently, we didn’t. She had seven EA applications due within two days of each other. She received a presidential scholarship, which is fabulous, but I wonder if they allow retroactive applications to the Martinson Honor’s College? I’m sure we’re S.O.L. but I know some schools have a bit of a grace period after admission decisions are sent out.
No, honors is very clear that applications aren’t considered after the EA deadline of 11/1.
Current students can apply though and there is a process to be accepted to honors in second year.
You might be in a good spot though as most of honors selected kids did not get scholarship (at least from what i see on this thread). Retrospectively maybe not applying for honors and trying for honors second year might be a good risk to take to get scholarship…
You can check on the Common App to see if you submitted the two Honors College essays just to see if you really did apply and submit your application to the Honors College. The only way to be considered for the Honors College is to have both essays completed. Congratulations on the Presidential Scholarship!
S24 admitted to FYE and is interested in aero. We are going to visit during the Feb long weekend and attend an admitted student tour. Would appreciate any tips on what to do to make the most of this trip since we are coming from socal and probably wont be back until the start of school if that is where he attends. Im wondering if there is a way to get a more in depth feel for campus ie attend a class.
Aside for the regular campus tour and engineering specific tour, for a prospective aero major reach out to ZSA to see if you can arrange a tour of Zucrow: Zucrow Student Association (ZSA) — Maurice J. Zucrow Laboratories
You can also ask if your son can shadow with one of those students for a class.
I would also recommend eating in one of the dining halls.
My DS got into his second choice major. How difficult is it to CODO to FYE? Purdue is his 1st choice and we are OOS. So if he’s not able to CODO then we have to rethink other options where he got into FYE.
Is there anyone from your student’s high school already at Purdue? Ask a guidance counselor if any alums are at Purdue in engineering; a student might be willing to meet/talk.
I don’t think there’s much value in attending a class. Talking to people about what they do and their experiences is more valuable to get a feel for the place. Purdue does a good job with its presentations. The students assigned to these panels are helpful.
President’s Day is not a day off of school, so campus should be hopping. Basketball is at Ohio State that Sunday so find a place to watch on TV with fellow Boilermakers.
I advise against eating in the dining halls. Several years ago that was a must do and fun (and surprisingly tasty). The overcrowding of record-setting incoming classes and post-COVID staffing (worst pay in the area so hard to fill roles) has made the dining halls a slog. Your student will figure out what locations work for his/her schedule when the time comes. Get something to eat in the Union and people watch.
Walking in and around campus locations is the best way to get a feel for the place.
