On campus housing has been a problem for several years now, even before my daughter started at Purdue. That said, there is no shortage whatsoever with OFF CAMPUS housing. Over 60% of Purdue students live off campus. Some of the options (such as Purdue-supervised cooperative housing) are cheaper than many of the dorms. Many apartments come furnished and rent by the room (so your lease is independent of your roommate’s lease in a 2-4 bedroom apartment).
I have a Sophomore at Purdue (ditto the hard work needed there; my Boilermaker does his stuff and I am proud of him) and my HS Senior was also deferred and is awaiting an answer. We are OOS (California). I know the kiddos may not know decisions until March 31st, but I hope it is sooner. His deferral letter also said he would automatically be considered for Spring start and be notified of that in February; he is still yet to receive that notification. Best of luck to your younger kiddo.
The Spring Start admissions have been delayed but are still slated to come out in Feb - so by Thursday, Feb 29th. The first date was Feb 15th and then the 23rd. This is as per email exchanges with the Admissions Office. Good luck!
Thank you for this information, I appreciate it.
Does anyone know, has Purdue traditionally added additional admitted students visits after RD comes out? Even the daily visits are fully booked at this point. Thanks!
Off campus housing is extremely tight with minimal vacancies within 3 miles of campus. There had been a sizable vacancy rate >5 years ago but the increasing annual class sizes absorbed it, despite some new inventory coming online in subsequent years. Rents have increased a great deal in the past 5 years. It is a landlord’s market.
One parent basically paid for 4 years of OOS tuition by buying real estate in town for their student to use–new construction that appreciated by $150,000+.
Students will start signing leases for Fall 2025 in Fall 2024 (somebody invariably starts taking deposits after Labor Day). Then plans change, friendships end and a whole lot of subletting happens. Housing is most definitely an issue in the near term, unless you’re cool with $2000 a month for a college kid.
So buy a condo or house basically and invest! We were seriously considering this for wherever our kid decides to go, just makes sense vs throwing away money to rent a room.
I wonder how many parents own their kid’s housing and how hard it would be to maintain from another state.
I found myself consumed last week on a Reddit thread on Purdue where upper level students were considering a protest by setting up tent cities on campus and then employees of Purdue started jumping in about how they are being priced out. I live 5 miles outside of Boston so it’s all relative, but it’s so hard. I think schools who are NOT struggling with dorm space are the exception right now, but it is so hard to navigate and plan.
I’ve heard this is standard from a parent whose kid went to Univ Texas from OOS. She said you own it for 3-4 years then sell it to the next parent. I was under the impression though that there is plenty of housing available at Purdue, both on and off campus.
My D never had housing issues, on or off campus. She graduated last spring. She was paying $475/month in Chauncey for her part of the rent. Four bedroom/1 bath, older building but just behind the Union Garage so very convenient to campus. The year before she paid $450 in a 4 bed/4bath but a mile or so away so she took the bus which had a stop in her complex.
There has been landlord consolidation near campus and students are reporting higher rents on lease renewals. There are students at all-electric apartments in town paying hundreds per month for electricity alone when it’s heating season. More affordable locations such as your daughter leased are snapped up quickly once leases open up for renewal during the school year. Kids lined up down the street, some overnight, when Granite opened up leases for vacancies last fall. it’s not ideal.
The students in line in September were upperclassmen waiting for a limited number of inexpensive four bedroom apartments. My daughter just signed a lease a few weeks ago. There are still apartments available at all the various apartment complexes both walking distance and on the bus route, though some are reportedly at 90%+ capacity. There is a new 13-floor apartment building about to start construction. The Verve is coming online in August (that one is very expensive, but it does take those who can afford it out of the market, which helps). Plus Purdue has a 900-bed dorm opening in fall 2025. It has been a mess, but things are getting better.
Regarding housing: Housing is not just an issue at Purdue. Some schools do not even guarantee housing to Freshman; Purdue does. Kiddos who pay attention and sign the housing contract when they need to should find space, BUT if they choose not to wait for assurance they have a spot, they can sign a lease somewhere. Yes, leasing for the following school year starts really early, and sometimes transportation is a consideration, but there are very affordable options in West Lafayette and Lafayette. The expectation that a student will be able to live on campus all four years is unreasonable.
Any update regarding the Spring Start admissions? It’s near 5pm EST and my kiddo still hasn’t received any notification.
Spring 2025? I don’t think those come out for a very long time.
My son’s deferral letter noted he would automatically be considered for Spring Start and that notification would be in February. I don’t know that many deferral letters had that notation, I just know his did.
Interesting. Sorry for the confusion.
No problem at all.
Has anyone tried requesting major change through the portal? I know the decisions won’t be out until end of March. Any parents of past or current students have gone through this process? Did you have success?
Nothing here. We are still waiting as well.
