Purdue Exploratory Track [interested in economics major]

My son got into Exploratory track in Purdue. He is undecided kid. He has applied economics at many places but he is undecided. He has gotten into U Pitt for economics.

I am wondering what are the negatives of exploratory track at Purdue - will he able to get into any major - or its very hard to get in most majors.

Unless your student is wanting CS, certain engineering disciplines, or flight, he should be fine declaring a major in nearly everything else.

my kiddo exactly this too. I think exploratory sounds pretty great overall. My biggest concern about Purdue is (1) the cut classes where it is sink or swim, not a fan of that )(2) that my kiddo will get lost, he shrugs it off and (3) the housing situation there. My son is also in at Pitt for economics and I go back and forth. What are you thinking?

Purdue economics is described at Program: Economics, BS - Purdue University - Acalog ACMS™ , including curriculum, pre-major, and change into major (CODO).

The CODO page says that “Major is open with no anticipated space restrictions”. Basic requirements are 2.75 GPA in prerequisite courses (minimum C- in each course).

For other majors, look at their pages in the catalog, including their CODO pages.

My daughter is a sophomore at Purdue and just switched into the BS in Econ from a different major with absolutely no problem. She is really enjoying her econ classes and wants to take the advanced math classes that the BS in Econ offers. She absolutely LOVES Purdue and was a transfer student a year ago (2nd semester) from a small engineering school.

That’s understandable. To be fair, though, Purdue’s “weed out” classes are not intended to cut kids out of the major. Students may retake them if they don’t do well (or don’t do as well as they hoped). It is actually fairly common for students to retake at least one class while at Purdue, and there is really no shame because many students have worn those shoes. Purdue knows some of their programs are very difficult and they want to make sure their students are well prepared for increasing rigor later. Also, Purdue has excellent job placement results, and their reputation with employers rests on students coming out solidly qualified.
